They were, though. For one thing they featured a character who was remotely recognisable as the Doctor. Capaldi I'll give you but I can't stand Smith's portrayal. It's the sentimentality that really drives me up the bend. I've always had an acute sensitivity to melodrama and phoney emotional cues, and they are rife in the Moffat seasons. The Akhaten speech makes me want to vomit. In fact, the way the Doctor became known for his "speeches" during Moffat's tenure was so cringeworthy and further solidified my hatred for the Doctor being characterised as a waxing moraliser. Chibnall pulled the trigger but Moffat loaded the gun. Was Smith's portrayal any more sentimental than most of the others? Particularly Tennant who was surely the most emo Doctor of all until Shatwah came along. Same goes with the (over) sensitivity and melodrama, which was just as much a hallmark of RTD1, let alone 2. Totally agree with you about Moffat speechifying scripts though. Awful and embarrassing, and totally Moffat's ego self-projecting.

Completely agree. Tennant was whining on about how lonely he was every other bloody week...

In fact, the way the Doctor became known for his "speeches" during Moffat's tenure was so cringeworthy and further solidified my hatred for the Doctor being characterised as a waxing moraliser. Chibnall pulled the trigger but Moffat loaded the gun. “MAKE THE FOUNDATIONS OF THIS SOCIETY A MAN WHO NEVER WOULD!” ”I COULD DO SO MUCH MORE! SO MUCH MORE!” (After being transformed into Christ via prayer.) ”And you know what happens now. Because you know what I’m gonna say. I forgive you.” Moffat’s era was abundant on crap and aggrandising speeches (the Akhaten example being the worst), but I reckon Smith was no more moralising than his NuWho predecessors or successors.

At his worst every other sentence sounded like a pseudo intellectual wannabe, pound shop tears in the rain copy. Clearly like Hauer he was hoping these would be great memorable quotes about life. As I've said before the absolute worst example is Hell Bent. Copy and pasted obviously LOL. The first thing you will notice about the Doctor of War is he's unarmed. For many, it's also the last.
Why did you banish him? Was it punishment, or for your own protection? Or are you just being cruel? Or just being cowardly?
OHILA: You have gone too far. You have broken every code you ever lived by.
DOCTOR: After all this time, after everything I've done, don't you think the universe owes me this?
OHILA: Owes you what? All you're doing is giving her hope.
DOCTOR: Since when is hope a bad thing?
OHILA: Hope is a terrible thing on the scaffold.
She died for who she was and who she loved. She fell where she stood. It was sad, and it was beautiful. And it is over. We have no right to change who she was.
Nobody's ever safe. I've never asked you for that, ever. These have been the best years of my life, and they are mine. Tomorrow is promised to no one, Doctor, but I insist upon my past. I am entitled to that. It's mine.Have you ever seen a bigger load of pretentious wank? It gets infuriating when you watch it. Also whilst I think it's a bit rich of Yak ( no offense) to say that Matt was too emo compared to Tennant, I do agree that Moffat is let off far too lightly. He started all the shit that we are drowning in now and he only gets away with it because of the sheer ineptitude of those who followed him. That said seasons 5-7 whilst not perfect are the obvious highlight of New Who with a much better Doctor, companions and a higher ratio of good stories.

And to think that some fans used to whinge about the Doctor's "moralising" about war in Planet of the Daleks, which was brief, better written, beautifully delivered in a softly spoken tone, and altogether far more subtle than anything in NuWho has ever dreamed of achieving.

I voted for Moffat. Garbage era. Like Zarius, I'd much sooner watch a Whittaker story (one of the few good ones) over most Moffat stories post Series 5. I'm sick of pretending that Series 6, 8-10 is any better than what's being transmitted now. Why is series 7 off the hook? Just wondering.... I quite enjoy the latter half of Series 7. It's far less messy than Series 6 and Clara and Smith are one of my favourite NuWho duos.

I initially broke off from NuWho after Dinosaurs on a Spaceship, although I did eventually do a massive catch-up of everything from there up to the end of the Jodie era. Things you do when the missus is away. Must admit, very little of the later Smith stuff stands out for me. I thought there were a few just about passable Capaldi eps on a good day, but ultimately too much of the usual NuWho crap writing and relationships baggage for me.
