There's a name I haven't heard in a while. Such a cool player and a sad loss at such a young age. I had one of her tuition videos long before the age of the internet.

Thanks for posting this. I was only vaguely aware of Emily Remler beforehand but this is my first genuine exposure to her work. Clearly immensely talented (and learned within the Jazz world), and whatever her self-conscious beginnings (as confessed within that interview), being inspired by Wes Montgomery and John Coltrane whilst playing in 1988 is no small characteristic. Steve Bailey’s upright-bass solo in Blues For Herb is also extraordinary- I love how Remler is clearly intensely synchronised with it in thought, despite not always playing in the moment. She’s clearly thinking every note through.

Indeed. a genuine loss to Jazz. I remember reading about her in a couple of books and magazines when i was a kid (Gene Lees wrote a particularly moving account) and caught up with her music later. We need more Emily Remlers. Sadly, i suspect there was only one... Oh wow, i didn't know she did one. That could have saved me from becoming a Clapton clone... And...it's Hot Licks, the scourge of all teenagers everywhere..! "Grot Licks, the world's loss-leader in music instruction. You can't help but be confused with these incredibly short-changed tapes. Grot Licks are of the highest audio-visual quality; hear your favourite players, dialled-down, over-lit, under-lit and half-cut. Grot Licks; let the best make you worse..!!"Tbf, i imagine one could actually learn something from the Emily Remler one...

Indeed. Yeah, total synergy and big ears, the true mark of a great musician. You cannot afford to be trashed up there at this level. Unless you have nothing to lose in the first place.

This is the PERFECT Yaz/13 song. I wish I had the editing software to do a tribute video.
