Ghost Light Part One
A superb atmospheric opening. The set design is first rate and I love Gwendoline's performance of "That's the Way to the Zoo." The Doctor gets to deliver some great lines too like "we all have our universe of terrors to face." Ace does a great job in conveying her fear of Gabriel Chase and Mark Ayres' score is creepy and doesn't seem out of place. I love this era!

‘The Mutants’ ep 2: The Marshal’s a wanker isn’t he? A well-played wanker, but nonetheless. Pravda always good value. The political and narrative subterfuge is interesting enough, but the pace is pretty slow. Some interesting camera shots at points. Decent cliff-hanger…3.5/5

Enemy Of The World: Still an standout of it's era and an clever spy thriller in the vein of the early Bonds/Avengers. Troughton's best performance is here both as the Doctor and Salamander, Jamie and Victoria are on fine form and the production and music design is above the rest. It does tend to be more of an rare ''in the right mood'' type for the era as it can plod a bit in the middle but that can be overlooked as noted prior. 8/10

The Happiness Patrol:
A solid story where the Doctor and Ace topple a regime in the space of one evening. I particularly like part three where the Doctor and his gang take down all of Helen A's henchmen and followers one at a time. The bits with the Candyman are surreal, but very enjoyable. Susan Q and Earl Simga are also nice additions to the story and I enjoy Dominic Glynn's creepy score. The camerawork is noteworthy especially with some titled shots in there. It's always nice to see some proper direction. If Ron Jones had directed it it would have been flat and uninspired. I like the costumes, the pink hair and the harmonica music. It's not perfect, but it is one of the most imaginative and ambitious McCoy stories out there. I do have problems with it and it isn't as good as Remembrance or Greatest Show, but it's still a pleasure to watch. 7/10

‘The Mutants’ ep 3: convincing cave setting and the flares in the atmosphere with the space station model shots are great. Stubbs and Cotton another of those emerging quasi-comedic comedy duo side stories…work well enough and I’ve not seen any of the infamous Rick James overacting as yet. Had to go back and check the director and it’s another Chris Barry effort which explains the excellent direction and cool camera work here. A good episode that tails off with the reintroduction of Monty Python man from the opening of ep 1…4/5

Finished the Season 8 Blu Ray set - enjoyed it so much that I was inspired to see some more Pertwee classics...namely The Sea Devils and The Green Death - great stuff even though must've watched these countless times before.
One thing struck me about rewatching these stories - I think they form part of a fairly continuous run of great serials that truly make 70s Who the peak of the show for me. That's why I think Jon and Tom will never be bettered - their eras pick up the baton from the 60s and run with it. The 80s stories contain some stand out moments for sure but, to me, it feels like the show by then is chasing past glories too much of the time while slowing down until the final stop. That said, given what came later, I do still love 80s Who as well - compared with New Who it's a masterpiece.

‘The Mutants’ ep 4: I think one thing that distinguishes this series from later (80s especially) ones is that the sets stand up to quite high levels of lighting. Hollis is on form here, pity it was the only Who he did. Certainly between them he and Pertwee make the exposition more fun than it probably was on the page. Music’s good in the ‘cathedral’ scenes too. Nips along quite breezily this episode, enjoyable stuff, 4/5

I watched Silver Nemesis on DVD. I know I watched it last week on BritBox, but I wanted to experience it again. I actually love this story. The beautiful countryside setting, the fact that it's all shot on location, the Cybermen, the brilliant 7th Doctor and Ace duo and the comedy moments. I don't even mind the skin heads either lol. It goes by at a really good pace and there's plenty of action in there too. Keff's score is one of his best and Chris Clough shoots the action well. The script by Kevin Clarke is fun with some intriguing moments scattered throughout. The Nemesis itself is interesting and the "doctor who?" scene is iconic. I think I prefer it to Bannermen these days. 8.5/10
Oh, and it's better than Attack. By far.

"I don't suppose you've completely ignored my instructions and secretly prepared any Nitro-9, have you?"I've always been fond of Silver Nemesis - it was my first 7th Doctor story and I agree that it's much better than Attack Of The Cybermen. However, it simply isn't as enjoyable as Delta/Bannermen.

Finished Greatest Show last night. Such an imaginative tale with striking visuals and atmospheric music. I agree that Mags is gorgeous although I'm more of a Flowerchild kind of guy. Shame she gets killed off so soon. I also like the creepy Chief Clown and Captain Cook. The Doctor walking away from the explosion at the end of part four is one of the most iconic moments of the entire era and Bellboy's death is wonderfully disturbing. I will definitely be adding this one to my DVD collection next week. You can't top Mags. Huge nose, nerdy and awkward, looks a bit like Lady Gaga. That does it for me. I might do an evil Clown thread. I like them so much. She's a decent singer too. The total package for you then.

The total package for you then. She DOES have a lovely voice. Also remember she finds the Chris Chibnall avatar Whizz Kid to be an insufferable arsehole, she also has big mad hair and as a Werewolf she has probably fought with Vampires at some point. She is perfect!

‘The Mutants’ ep 5: Pretty standard stuff so far in this one, definitely think it’s not got the content to sustain 6 episodes, 5 would probably have been better. I’ve sat through the last three episodes wondering if the investigator is the Master or not haha…wonder if the audience of the time did as well..? Anyway, pretty much basic bloody filler this, even if the sets still look better than usual. 2/5

‘The Mutants’ ep 6: ‘Qualified in?’…’Practically everything…’ haha. Howell’s good, injected some much-needed class here. Overall, it’s nice premise this story, just tediously realised and told here. The banter in this finale is an improvement on episode 5 and that final metamorphosis stage is impressive, quasi-like Light in ‘Ghostlight’…Cute ending too. Back up to 4/5 for this one…

‘The Time Monster’ ep 1: Great opening episode, lots of action, questions, great soundtrack and core cast on fab form. Maybe Delgado’s put-on accent is a bit shit, though his ‘infernal charm’ is in overdrive. Delgado takes so long of the ‘f’ in ‘fools’ I assumed he was about to swear haha. Can be doing without that Bessie music theme, Christ. Except the ’superdrive’ music, that’s cool. Great cliff-hanger too, enjoyable romp all round. 4.5/5

Fathers Day: I've lost a load of affection for Series 1 over the years and find 90% of it has aged like milk but this one along with Dalek and Empty Child still holds up well IMO. Eccleston's not bad here and isn't gurning like a rabid git throughout, Murray Gold actually tones the John Williams Tribute Act down and gives us some rare synth music and the monsters themselves are one of the few NuWho ones that actually are pretty creepy and not fokkin farcial although they don't really make much sense in the rest of the continuity. The mawkishness does come in at the end but it's still an rare glimpse into an decent type of Who from this series that doesn't feel like a send up/awful parody. 3.5/5 Castrovalva: I actually watched this one Tuesday night with it being Peter Davison's 70th birthday and that and still think it's an good opener for him, there's of course, the sagging Bidmead techno waffle and psuedo science but it's a much more inspired episode than Logopolis, Davison injects enthusiasm into this compared to Tom waiting to bugger off down the pub, Tegan's not bad here and Nyssa is still spankable . It does feel like this is where Adric started to become an background character although he's not an completely unbearable git and Ainley is starting to become a bit hammy but I still find it an pleasurable watch with some drink. 4/5 Nyssa is always spankable
