The animation of the characters is not great, and the likenesses are the worst yet. Steven's expression seems to be permanently stuck on 'smelling a fart'.... but the rest of it isn't quite as bad as I'd feared. It's easy to see why they chose this one to be more experimental. I don't think I'll exactly be a fan of it as an animation though. I doubt if I'll bother watching it again. It IS a very imaginative story though. I did find it hard to get through on audio only when it was released on CD. You do need visuals of one sort or another to get the best out of it. Not had chance to look at the recon and spruced up episode yet. I'm saving the best 'til last. They've done some cool CG work on the reconstruction. You also get the choice of listening to the Peter Purvis narration as well. I'm quite happy with the release. Not sure what the Escape Room is all about, though. The time of it is well over an hour. It just looks like a typical DVD/Blu ray extra. I did have a quick look at Escape Room. I lasted about 5 seconds before thinking: What a waste of resources....

Is it Cyril or Russell? Where's Bernard with a "we had a problem with fat people who are villains" pisstake? I must be having an off day. “We had long conversations about bringing Russell T Davies back to Doctor Who because he’s an immensely successful showrunner. Time and society and culture and taste has moved on, and there’s a problem with the Russell of old and today, in that he’s an unprincipled egotist who is fat. And I had problems with that, and a lot of us on the production team had problems with that- with associating corpulence with egotism, and trust me, there’s a very long tradition of this. So we made the choice to bring back Davies WITHOUT the egotism, and with an extra dose of principle and narrative consistency.” Wishful thinking, perhaps?

Not had chance to look at the recon and spruced up episode yet. I'm saving the best 'til last. This is virtually identical to my take, having watched this yesterday. The facial animations don’t work well in the slightest. Everyone looks bafflingly gormless and the 3D animation style would not work in the slightest for a more quotidian story, as already proven by the laughably disastrous Web of Fear attempt. That said, the actual animated environments and wide-shots were all much better and a little more dynamic than I expected. Certainly more tolerable than the odious Web of Fear Episode 3 animation. Even if some artistic liberties were taken, I don’t personally mind it here, because one of my criticisms of the original story was that, in the old recon format, it felt too confined and prosaic for what was clearly intended to be a highly surreal story. Although I don’t mind the story, I think The Mind Robber and Warriors’ Gate were markedly more successful attempts at creating a surreal environment populated by incorporeal (or quasi-corporeal) beings. Having said that, I am bloody thankful that the last episode survives. And if the new recon’s been as well cleaned up as insinuated, I’ll likely opt for that when re-watching it.

The worst purchase I've made recently is the Blu ray for the "The Daleks in Colour." I can't quite explain why I bought it. Even The Daleks DVD is just the old one from The Beginning boxset. There's a "making of" documentary which I will never watch either.
