I enjoy the serial enough to buy it, but the animation itself is poor. They never really topped the animation for The Invasion in my opinion. That one was so moody and effective compared to the later ones. Yes, I'm afraid the best animations are at least ten years old. Invasion, Moonbase, even Ice Warriors is better than anything they've served up recently. There's a fanzine called Vworp Vworp who made an animation of the first chapter of David Whittaker's oringinal Doctor Who and the Daleks Target book; A Meeting on the Common. Admittedly, they had to use their own actors for this alternative origin story, but the animation is way better than current Who standards, and the likenesses are fantastic. Attachments:

Why The Moonbase (and other earlier animations) work so well.

Why The Moonbase (and other earlier animations) work so well. Great animation. Perfectly captures the style and feel of the original production. I'd love to see that particular animation team do The Wheel in Space, the most overlooked Cyberman story of the Sixties.

Just found out this is from Dinopuff, the guy that did the brilliant fan animation for The Celestial Toymaker. His work is sublime. Completely shows the current official animations up.

Ian Levine's review of the animation:
"I watched the story at the BFI yesterday. Let me begin by reasonably stating that I do love the animations overall but this one is so far removed from the story that I love, that it makes me cringe. This was MY era, this was MY Doctor, and seeing Mrs Wiggs as a knitted tea cosy just makes me despair. WHY OH WHY is it so terribly wrong to want to see these beloved classics looking like the way they were made. The BBC seems dead set against anything at all remotely faithful as if it's a crime. I despair"

Apparently they've made quite a few changes according to Blogtor Who:
"Overall some interesting creative decisions have been made. For example, Joey the clown is now closer to 7 feet tall and skinny whilst Clara is a tiny little clown gripping onto Joey like a child sat on the shoulders of a parent. Those changes are less successful when compared to the King and Queen of Hearts who are appropriately origami-like creations which work particularly well. There are also some wonderful textures for characters like Mrs Wiggs, whilst Cyril (Billy) is grubby like a schoolboy but with a polished sheen. All of these tap into the unnerving and surreal which very much is appropriate for the realm of the Celestial Toymaker."

Well thats me my intreast torpedoed. I didn't mind the upgrading of the sets via 3D but making the characters outlandish cartoons kind of undercuts the true horror of the story.
It's implied that maybe these characters are either sentient at best and were once real people at worst. Either way they are treated as disposable playthings in the Toymaker's games. It's cruel and existentially horrifying.
But then of course the BBC wouldn't be faithful, after all things are not so "black & white" anymore...

It's someone else's vision of The Celestial Toymaker. It's no surprise that the best animations are the ones that are the most faithful i.e. The Invasion and The Moonbase. I understand why they make changes, but some of this sounds very silly.

Why insist on working on a show they have such blatant disrespect for? It's staggering.

According to Ian Levine, this animation has been delayed indefinitely.
Probably because its shit.

I can't be bothered.
I'd much rather buy Tom Baker serials at the moment. Some proper, authentic Who rather than someone's weird "reimagining" of it.
