Stoke Me a Clipper still holds up. My only real criticism is the pacing. After that amazing intro with Ace Rimmer, you have to sit through the "Lister tries to bonk Brian Cox's wife" sketch. Which is funny, don't get me wrong, but it just feels like it's in the way somehow. Can't go from Ace riding a crocodile to that.
But yeah, it's a lovely showcase for Chris Barrie's talents and would have made a great final episode for him. I'm a bit disappointed they never really acknowledged it after Rimmer (somehow) returned.
What's really funny is that Rimmer in the Dave era is still trying to become an officer, which must mean that at some point, Lister demoted him. Ouch.

What's really funny is that Rimmer in the Dave era is still trying to become an officer, which must mean that at some point, Lister demoted him. Ouch. My headcanon is that Ace Rimmer travelled to the DW universe (since he can cross dimensions) and became a companion of the 8th Doctor, and the 8th Doctor picked up Avon after the events of Kaldor City. The three of them went travelling through time and space for years, until they eventually returned to the Red Dwarf universe after season 8 by accident. The Doctor, Ace and Avon saved Red Dwarf from the microbe and the original Rimmer and then went and found Lister, Kryten and the Cat and Kochanski and brought them back from the mirror reality. Meanwhile the Simulants after learning that lots of humans were alive in the universe killed all or most of the crew that had fled Red Dwarf including Hollister and proceeded to attack Red Dwarf shortly after. The Doctor of course defeated the Simulants, but in the process the series 8 Rimmer died. The Doctor however was able to preserve the series 8 Rimmer's mind and download it onto a spare memory disc that Ace had around, and created a new hard light hologram body for the series 8 Rimmers from it. The Doctor however didn't clear the disc properly by mistake, leaving a few memories from that disc in the series 8 Rimmers mind, but none from when he was Ace. The series 8/holo Rimmer was left behind with Lister, Kryten, Kochanski and the Cat, whilst the original Ace continued on with the Doctor and Avon who go back to the Doctors universe. (The TARDIS also doesn't work properly in this universe, like in Pete's world explaining why the Doctor can't take them back to earth either.) To be fair minus the crossover elements I think that is what was meant to have happened, that the series 8 Rimmer died and was brought back as a hologram and some of the old discs memories were left behind as they mention him dying twice.

I'm sort of following this, but I can't really imagine Avon and the Doctor wanting to be around each other. Avon is far too cold and brutal for the Doctor, and the Doctor is too much of an unknown for Avon.

Don't worry if I took over Big Finish I wouldn't make it canon (well if Paul Darrow were still with us I might just to hear him and Chris Barrie together haha.)

I watched Twentica. It's not really a great episode (how was history not completely f*cked by the end??), but the more I think I about modern Dr Who, the more of an appreciation I gain for how totally unpretentious Red Dwarf has managed to remain through the years.
Imagine if Andrew Cartmel was still making Doctor Who to this day. Sure, it probably wouldn't be fantastic and groundbreaking anymore, but it would still be Doctor Who.

My only real complaint is that Chris Barrie overacts a lot in the Dave era and it's starting to annoy me a little.

I also watched Can of Worms (aka Polymorph III). This episode very distinctly reminds me of that time Grant Naylor ditched the Lister pregnancy episode for being too unfunny...
Cat's description of giving the Polymorph a blowjob was not something I ever needed to hear... Doug clearly wanted to challenge Rob's iconic 'Cat has sex with a barbed penis' scene from Backwards lmao

It's like meeting up with old friends years later and having as much fun as you did back then.

I put my Frankie Goes to Hollywood album on this evening and there are quotes from Ronald Reagan used in one of the songs. It's a very good impression of him from none other than Chris Barrie! I've never noticed before. Listening back to it it definitely sounds like Chris. Only a few weeks back did I learn that Danny John-Jules was in a Wham music video. They certainly got about a bit back then

I've started a blog reviewing every episode of the show rimmerexperience.blogspot.com Dude, you're savage when it comes to the Cat in The End I got PTSD flashbacks to when I introduced my mother to the show and the Cat came onscreen for the first time. She never watched another episode
