I watched Warriors over the bank holiday weekend and honestly I think it has a lot going in its favour. There are obviously a lot of flaws and I think the final part isn't as exciting as parts two and three, but I think the whole thing holds up better than people say it does. I don't like the Silurians myself, but the Sea Devils are cool and I dig the design. I laughed once or twice at the ridiculous death scenes of some of the characters (not naming any names). I didn't really notice the "bad" direction even though I focus on the visual side of the stories. Personally, aside from a few crummy moments, I thought the direction was one of the better things about the story. Roberts is much better than Ron Jones, that's for sure. I think the script is probably Byrne's best work for the series despite a slowish opening. The costumes appeal to me as I'm an 80s fan and obviously I LOVE Tara Ward (have I mentioned before?). I think the real highlight is Davison's performance, though. His performance is probably in my top three Davison performances along with Caves and Resurrection. He's so much better in his third season compared to his first.

TBH, I just find Warrior's of the deep a bit meh. Obviously better direction and scripting would have made it more palatable, but it was never going to be a classic. Sure there are worse, Underworld and Timeflight for example, but this would still have been dull and uninspiring. Give me Twin Dilemma any day

He's so much better in his third season compared to his first. That goes without saying, I think. Irrespective of how one ranks the stories of his era, he's infinitely more confident in the role by his third season. I'm wondering how he'd have fared if he had a fourth...

Had Davison stayed in the role another year, I think Grade would have found it more difficult to have swung the axe at it in the midst of Season 22. I think Davison might have finally cemented the role as his own had he done a fourth year, something he was only just sewing the seeds of in his third year after two years of being petrified of creeping out from Tom Bakers shadow.

I've read that Peter wanted to stay on but he'd been persuaded that he should only stay as long as Troughton felt was ideal (3 years/seasons). Then, too late, he changed his mind. I wonder if Caves would even exist if he had stayed on!? Or The Twin Dilemma lol...

Probably Mark of the Rani too.
