He was so much more than a clown, though. There's so much mystery in his eyes and he perfectly conveys the sense that he's two steps ahead of everyone else. Some of the modern Doctors are impossible to take serious especially the new chap with his singing and cringe line delivery. One gets praised for it, the other is the butt of jokes. Can you guess which is which? I'm just saying that it's understandable if someone would come away with the wrong impression of Sylvester and his era. It was very kitsch and stylized, and that's going to look ridiculous to a lot of people. Especially if the lavishness of Hinchcliffe or the sentimentality of RTD or the mind games of Moffat is their high standard for the show. It's also worth noting that there's a bias towards whatever's new. My mother for example respects the classics, but she'd always pick New Who over them because it's just more modern. Ironically it's why she prefers McCoy over the earlier Doctors lol. (She made a singular exception towards the Whittaker era, because she hates the idea of a female Doctor and Jodie's acting in general). My mum enjoys the Tennant era and some of Smith, but she's probably liked about three episodes since he left. She's not really a fan of the series. She's been in the room with me when I've watched classic who and has been kinder to some stories (Remembrance) than others (The Ultimate Foe). She also grew up with Tom/Lalla and the early Davison stuff, but outside of scary memories of the Daleks (which I guess must have been Destiny) and the theme tune, she doesn't really think all that much about it. We watch the new series as a family because we always have, but it's becoming increasingly difficult for either us to bother with it now.

Mine adores Tennant. He's basically the king of Doctor Who as far as she's concerned, with Eccleston and Smith being runner-ups. Like me, she loathed Clara and so 2/3rds of the Capaldi era was a dud, but she enjoyed series 10. She's seen exactly two Whittaker episodes: her first and last.
I once managed to convince her to watch the show from the very beginning, but the marathon ended tragically with a viewing of "The Web Planet" lmao.
She has seen various random stories from each Doctor though.
EDIT: Just remembered that she recently mentioned enjoying the Pertwee era a lot, due to its earthbound formula, and the Brigadier being around.

Let's not forget two more hilarious bad Tennant "acting" moments - his "anger" in Idiot's Lantern and that awful scene against the non-speaking Beast in Satan Pit. How in God's name did the directors not go "Let's try that again, shall we Dave?"

I have to give Davies a kind of credit for surprising me, as regards just how much further away from the original programme called Dr Who that he managed to get, considering how far away it was already by the time he got his slippery hands of the franchise again. I mean I genuinely didn't think it would be possible for him to make it THAT much worse, but yep, somehow he managed it. My original review was removed on Mondas, so I can't repost it, but based on this, the next series is going to be even worse that the Jodie era, if that's at all possible, so I submit from this point on.
