Turning the colour down on your TV is probably the closest you're going to get.

Turning the colour down on your TV is probably the closest you're going to get. Bit of a no-brainer, isn't it..? Given the amount of effort required, and their estimation of the DW fanbase, i'm frankly astonished that the BBC resisted the temptation to grace us with a 9th disc...

The Zygon Invasion
I finally gave in and watched a Capaldi. I have to say this was better than I remembered. In fact, it was rather good. I still dig the Clara/Bonnie reveal and I was quite surprised by how cinematic it felt. I dunno, it didn't feel like the usual childish NuWho nonsense. I look forward to part two.
8/10

Watched a bunch of Capaldi stuff as well as Matt's farewell story. Let's start off with the worst:
Dark Water/Death in Heaven
This really does suck. I'm not even jumping on the bandwagon. It just feels so off. Dark Water has a couple of decent moments, but Death in Heaven is a long hour of televisual excrement. The Cybermen are ALWAYS shat on in the new series. They essentially just stand in a graveyard for a bit in this before they all fly off like some kind of Iron Man knock off. 1/10
The Magician's Apprentice/The Witch's Familiar
Much, much better. The first episode is actually quite a tense "where's the Doctor" episode. The second episode isn't as good, but I like some of the references and the strange mix of Daleks is my favourite kind of self-indulgent fan service. 7/10
Time of the Doctor
A bit rough and just as disappointing as it was back in 2013. I do like the idea of the Doctor fighting over the course of his life in one place, but doing it in a sixty minute special makes it feel less impactful. Hardly a Christmas turkey, but Matt deserved a better send off. 5/10

I'm starting to wonder if Series 9 is actually the best of the Capaldi era, not Series 10. I also forgot Maisie Williams was in some of it. What a hottie.

Burrunjor will also be very pleased to know that I'm now a bit of an Osgood fanboy. She wears those question marks with no shame. You go girl!

I also remember the plane explosion causing quite a stir at the time because there was an attack on a plane a few hours before the first part. The best bit of the episode is definitely the Osgood/Capaldi relationship. I adore Jenna and the character of Clara, but Osgood comes across as a much nicer person with a less controlling personality. I notice with NuWho that the first part is almost always better than the second with a few rare exceptions. Overall this is a much better use of the Zygons than Day. 7/10

Overall this is a much better use of the Zygons than Day. 7/10 I know absolutely NO ONE will believe me on this and that's fair enough when you oggle as much as I do, but Osgood would have been a better fit for Capaldi. For a grumpier Doctor I think you need more of a Ducky as his companion to help balance it off, and someone he can clash with. Jon Pertwee had that with the Brig and Jo, and Hartnell had it with Vicki being the sweeter one and Ian and Barbara being the ones who can clash with him. One helps to show off his softer side so he's not just a mean c*nt, and the other can provide some interesting conflict. It's why I still say Journey Blue and Osgood would have been his best two companions, with Journey being a Leela type. Also they could have got the best out of old and new who that way, as we could explore those two companions home lives, like new who fans wanted, but rather than indulging in dreary soap opera shit with Danny Pink, Osgood's home life would have been fighting monsters with UNIT, and Journey's would have been a Dalek war, which could have served as a story arc, giving the monsters a purpose and even leading into the search for Gallifrey. Also the two girls could have started out somewhat confrontational, but bonded over losing loved ones to the Daleks. (I'd have had Osgood's mother be the woman in Resurrection of the Daleks who was killed by the Dalek duplicates that looked like her, and obviously Journey's family were killed by them. We could get cool flashbacks to Osgood's early years at UNIT, what she was doing during the Dalek Invasion of 09 when the monsters who killed her parents arrived and maybe she had a panic attack, and similarly we could see how Journey's home planet was overrun by the Daleks. Maybe in her future earth was invaded and conquered, and her group are the last humans left alive struggling to survive? All kinds of interesting avenues to get behind, and you could also have had the Doctor express guilt for not destroying them in Genesis and Journey and even Osgood being angry with him for it. (After she spent her life admiring him for being the only person who could stop the monsters who killed her mother.) Hell you could even have them elope at the end if you wanted representation. All of that would have been better than what we got, though don't get me wrong you'd have needed a PROPER version of the Master in this hypothetical too, and put a lid on the female Doctor idea, thereby chasing all the insane gender activists away from the fandom and allowing it to be a show for everybody rather than an LGBT only club.

The Christmas Town is lovely and Matt delivers a genuinely doctor-like performance. I actually like him more here than in Series 5 and 6.

Silver Nemesis - Omnibus Edition
This is the most pointless thing ever made. I can understand making extended versions, but I really don't have a clue why anyone would bother cutting a story down to the bare minimum. Now we have a version that lacks the wacky 80s fun of the televised version and the coherence of the VHS version. This is a cut down version of the Special Edition of Nemesis so it's basically an inferior version of an inferior version. The events of Part 3 take place over the course of 10 minutes. There's no time to stop and breath here which makes it feel like NuWho. Perhaps that's the point?
I won't be watching this version again. It's probably the least fun I've had with a story I otherwise find very satisfying.
