I did. Gave in after all. To be fair I watched it with my family who were curious. (Except for my new niece who is only 3 months old, though to be fair she would probably have written a better episode.)
It was bloody awful. Not the worst of the Jodie era I must say. At least for once it seemed to focus more on the sci fi, rather than identity politics. There was also more action than usual for a Chibnall episodes, but the usual problems still weighed any chance it had down. Jodie Whittaker was absolutely atrocious with scrunch faces, stupid running around, overdoing her already bad accent taken up to 11, Yaz was even worse and had no personality, whilst Dan is ineligable, and there was a lot of tedious soap opera bullshit between the guest stars.
There was a romance between Aisling Bea and the male guest star. She was feisty, he was a slacker with a heart of gold. How often have we seen that cliche? However whilst Chibbers seemed to want the male guest star to be a Philip J Fry type, he actually came over as quite creepy. The guy kept trophies from all the girls he had shagged locked up in a locker downstairs in the place he worked! He came over as more Dennis Reynolds from It's Always Sunny than Philip J Fry LOL.
Oh they also finally had Yaz say she was in love with Jodie, albeit only to Dan, who also confronted Jodie about it. Don't worry Maxil you don't have to regret not watching it as nothing happened LOL. They are definitely building up to it.
The Daleks meanwhile were very badly handled. To start with you could easily replace them with any other villain and it would be no different. Unlike Remembrance or even Resurrection which were definitely Dalek stories, in this one there is nothing to distinguish them from other monsters. Hell even new who stories like Dalek and Into the Dalek could only be Dalek stories. Also the dialogue was awful. Chibnall must have reused this joke about 20 times in the episode. "DALEKS DO/ARE/ ARE NOT" insert here. Marry, patient, love, sweat, learn, need jobs, are fair etc.
They also fluctuated from being unstoppable to stupid, jokey villains throughout the episode. On the one hand one of them is more successful in killing the Doctor than ever before. Just one is able to shoot her and kill her point blank. On the other hand when it is convenient two of them are tricked into shooting each other, and they are never able to shoot straight when there are only two feet away from people. At one point John Bishop just literally casually walks away from one of the monsters as it's shooting him. Also they have trouble getting through aluminium doors, old rusty gates, and get blown up by fireworks too.
Best of all the Doctor beats them as now the sonic screwdriver has the power to put bits of the Doctor and her companions DNA in other parts of the building which tricks them.
Overall a subpar mess, which was a step up from the usual Chinball mess. Even Claudia Boleyn didn't seem to like it. (As much as I like her and agree with her politics, she couldn't be more wrong when it comes to DW LOL.) Still she rightfully pointed out how creepy the guy was.
Mr Tardis meanwhile loved it and was moved at Yaz's confession to wanting to shag Jodie LOL.
He really will defend anything.
