Terminator, and it's not even close. I do enjoy Robocop and it has an underrated, amazing theme, but Terminator is on a par with the likes of Planet of the Apes, Jurassic Park, Wrath of Khan as one of the best genre films of all time.
Robocop I'd say is on a par with the likes of The Raven (both versions) Vault of Horror etc in being a classic, but Terminator really is creme of the crop.
Incidentally I'd also recommend The Sarah Connor Chronicles. (You'd love the two leading ladies LOL. Both gorgeous.) The Sarah Connor Chronicles kind of puts a lot of the later sequels to shame as it shows you can do more with the premise, though granted that's probably because it's a tv show and can explore things in greater detail. Either way it's a great series.
(I also think Sarah Connor Chronicles shows you how you can replace a male character with a woman and nobody notices. Technically Summer Glau replaces Arnie's role as the Terminator protector. However it works here, as there is a reason in universe that it would happen. It's not done to pander to an agenda, and Summer Glau is a great actress who does the series justice. Also the shows creators and fans aren't so smug they'll smell their own farts just because they have a wahman in the role. That helps LOL.)

I find RoboCop to be better directed and I also like the satire and humour in the film too. You're right, the theme is amazing. I can't believe they didn't use it in RoboCop 2. I also love this cute nerdy babe with the glasses: What a cutie.

I've never heard of the Robocop tv series Brian mentioned. I'll have to check it out.

She disappears after Bob Morton dies and she doesn't return in any of the sequels. Very hot lady, though. I've not seen Prime Directives either, but in my RoboCop history book they give it a good review. There was also a TV series in the mid 90s which I found mildly enjoyable. Another sequel to the original film has been planned, but I'm not sure it will even get off the ground now.

Sorry but I vote for Terminator also. I like RoboCop a lot but Terminator is just more my taste.

I have to confess that I've yet to have actually seen Robocop. Unsure how the hell it passed me by. However, I have purchased it recently, and will be watching it once I get to 1987 in my recently undertaken film journey.
The first two Terminator films are absolute classics though. The pinnacle of the sci-fi/action genre (along with the first two Alien films). I'll only vote once I've got around to viewing Robocop, however.

Watched Robocop for the first time last month. Excellent film, with a sharp ear for satirical commentary (primarily related to Reagan-governed America) and calculated direction, as well as being both visceral and funny in equal measure. I feel tempted to abstain, but I suppose The Terminator has a greater longevity as well as being a superior film technically, so that gets my vote. Two great picks though, and some of the best action films of the decade.

Terminator is a noir 80s science fiction slasher, but RoboCop ends up being the stronger of the two thanks to a terrific cast and the way the film is structured to be symmetrical (The board room scene where ED209 kills Kenny leads into the mill scene at the beginning of the film, while the mill scene where RoboCop takes down the thugs leads directly into the same board room with Dick Jones giving another speech). I do hope the new game redeems the second film and the underwhelming remake. 3 is OK.

Robocop is a classic too, but the correct answer is Terminator.

Robocop just edges it out, though Terminator wouldn't be nearly as good without that final battle sequence, which is the one thing that makes it timeless as opposed to an old 80s dud. Terminator 2, however, is a complete crock of garbage.

Back in the 90s, the best movies never made were the video gams Robocop vs Terminator and Shadows of the Empire

I prefer Paul Verhoeven as a director. Cameron is a good director too, but I've never liked him as a person and honestly I find Verhoeven's stylistic touches more appealing. I could also make the case that the RoboCop franchise isn't nearly as royally screwed up as the Terminator franchise, but that's not the purpose of the thread.
