WHAT season 6 six is the best season of the show. Even if I didn't hate all the repetitive jokes and characterisation going down the toilet, I am fundamentally a series 1-2 purist lol. I LOVED that original "we are just floating in space and have nothing to do forever" vibe. Rimmer was also so much better in his JMC uniform, like a bossy prefect. At least we can all agree 8 was a big mistake lmao (although Chloe Annett is so much cuter with her blonde hair) I don't mind two episodes out of series eight, "Cassandra" and "Only the Good...." (the latter only with the alternate end that would have been the perfect end to Dwarf)

Rimmer plowing his way through the female crew in Back in the Red is one of my favourite moments. Annett's Series 7 look works for me. It isn't just her hair, but her red outfit that she wears. I didn't like her nearly as much in Series 8 but then they didn't really do all that much with her.

8 is awful. The only good ep is Cassandra, which tellingly is the only one you can imagine working in other seasons.

My favourite chapters of the original novel are when the crew was still alive, so I don't mind having them around in theory. I would have liked a series of Rimmer and Lister as members of Z-Shift, Rimmer trying to ace the astronavigation exam etc. They had Norman Lovett and Mac MacDonald back. They even had the old bunk room. Hell, there was enough content in the book to even make up certain episodes if they wanted.
I wish they did that instead of the stupid prison arc, which never made any sense. Why is there a prison on a shit mining vessel? Why would Hollister bother throwing the main characters in there?
Just do this for the entire series:

I do agree with that. It seemed like two different concepts crudely shoved together. It would have been more fun to just have go back to their old statuses.

I may have mentioned this before, but I don't think Dwarf needs a definitive end. When the show finally finshes I'd still like to believe that the gang are out there somewhere still getting themselves into smeg.

They need to give one of the other 'Dwarfers a chance at a W too if there's another climatic episode. The last few have all been Rimmer and we know he can never be a hero long-term. Give Kryten a go next.

Made it to Series VI on my rewatch. I used to trash this season a lot for its repetitive humour, but I feel much more positive towards it now. The setup of the crew having lost Red Dwarf both injects new excitement and also feels like a natural evolution. In Series IV and V they already began to increasingly rely on Starbug as the main setting. So removing the main ship feels like they're just getting rid of what had become merely a convenient safety net for the crew.
Finding the ship is also the first coherent objective they've had in ages, and there's some actual attempts at worldbuilding with the GELFs and the Simulants.

I like the fact that they're in an even smaller ship barely surviving on the food they have. Series 6's simulants are the most iconic ones as well. I think all the episodes are good, but Legion towers above the others for me.

This claustrophobic stripped-down vibe is also why I'm very partial to the final season of Blake's 7, even though that seems to be a mixed opinion in the fandom.

Pretty much everything from Sand to Blake is either a 9 or a 10. I'm also quite fond of Rescue too which is still a better Sea Devils story than Legend of the Sea Devils

It's such a laugh, and I love the way the games tie into the plot in a variety of ways (the actual games played by the crew, Orac playing with the computer, Avon playing against Belkov, who is also playing against Servalan, with the crew as pawns). Vila taking out the guard and rescuing everyone's necks is a highlight of the character too. My copy of Scorpio Tales came with an interview with the writer, and he seems like such a likable guy. Pretty much said the whole thing was just all in good fun, and he never thought too hard about the science. And I can't hate that. I wish he did more.
