Of course you knew that, but in case any of you were starting to be swayed by the bullshit of I Player, all tv shows only get 3 million these days etc. No that doesn't cut it.
Even with the fiddled viewers over a 7 day period it's still for the most part getting viewers in the 3 million range.
Meanwhile let's take a look at Death in Paradise. Now this show is also 2 decades old, and in contrast to New Who it's always had the critics trash it, yet look at its viewers for its 2024 season. These are 7 day viewings it must be said, but even then as we've been over 7 days for DW are in the 3 million category. Hell RTD is crowing about how Space Babies has got 5 million in a month as a big achievement.
They'll always try and compare it to things like Eastenders and Corrie and say they aren't getting good viewers either, completely unaware that both of those shows are suffering terrible ratings crisis' too. I myself am desperately in love with Alison King and have been since I was 18. She is THE dark haired, big nosed, mature looking, ruthless, femme fatale of my dreams, but even I can't stomach Corrie anymore and finally stopped watching it this year.
However Corrie and Eastenders are less likely to be cancelled than DW even with that because 1/ Soaps fill lots of slots in a week, unlike a big sci fi drama. 2/ They are cheap. 3/ It's probably more bother to replace them as a new soap will have to build up an audience, where as Eastenders and Corrie can be retooled very easily, unlike DW which is a more niche genre and has to go through a major reinvention with new actors, new writers, new monsters etc.
Honestly I fail to see how they can even justify a series 3? Bare in mind Disney might also be in some trouble next year as they are losing more money and Gina and Scar Jo's lawsuits could very well open the floodgates so really why keep a lame duck of a franchise that they don't own all the rights too anyway?
To quote the theme from Death in Paradise.
It's funny, even though it's a detective series Death in Paradise is more like a modern classic who in that it isn't a tedious soap opera, it has managed to replace its leading men and not become so hung up on one like Tennant, and whilst each leading man has been different, the basic formula of the Englishman abroad has been maintained. Also Death in Paradise resisted attempts to have a female lead too. Not that female leads are bad on their own obviously LOL, but you know what I mean they resisted the calls to change the established formula, with the actress who plays Florence showing more backbone than sadly any of the classic era Doctors and saying that she didn't want to mess up the formula of a man and a woman. Ironically as the leads are all different characters in Death in Paradise, I personally wouldn't have minded in this case. In fact I'd have preferred a female lead like Ingrid Oliver or Morven Christie, but ultimately no the producers didn't bow to pressure, were confident in the formula and that's why Death in Paradise like DW used to do, has maintained its viewers.
BTW even Death in Paradise's spin off, Beyond Paradise starring Kris Marshall is kicking New Who's arse. Here are its viewers.
It's funny when Kris Marshall was suggested for the 13th Doctor, snobs were acting like it would be the worst thing ever, and thank god it was Jodie not him. Well looks like he'd have lost half his viewers if he had played the Time Lord, or Time Person.
