We move on to the 10th Doctor's run, a jumble of brilliant, terrible and average stories. I've split the series 4 finale into two because I don't mind the first part but I loathe the second.
Classics:
Human Nature/The Family of Blood Blink Utopia/Sound of Drums/Last of the Time Lords Daleks in Manhattan/Evolution of the Daleks Smith and Jones Gridlock
Fun:
The Next Doctor The Shakespeare Code The Lazarus Experiment Tooth and Claw
Watchable:
42 The Stolen Earth Rise of the Cybermen/The Age of Steel School Reunion The Girl in the Fireplace Army of Ghosts/Doomsday The Sontaran Stratagem/Poison Sky Midnight
Meh:
The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit The Web Planet Voyage of the Damned
Terrible:
Turn Left The Doctor's Daughter Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead (sorry, I can't stand this one) Unicorn and the Wasp The Christmas Invasion Fires of Pompeii The End of Time Journey's End Planet of the Odd Partners in Crime Planet of the Dead The Runaway Bride New Earth Love and Monsters Idiot's Latern Fear Her

Did I miss Tennant encouraging the Menoptera to scream “ZAAARB-EEEEEEEEE!”? God knows what story I was thinking of there. I reckon The Web Planet tops most of these

The Web Planet certainly does not top most of the Tennant era. Sound premise and first episode sure, but oh dear god is it an insomnia cure as well as laughable in execution.
Meanwhile as for my Tennant era rankings, again I'm sure I've done this before, so apologies if some of my rankings are a bit different LOL, but
Classics
Waters of Mars Midnight Library two parter Sontaran two parter Smith and Jones Shakespeare episode Next Doctor Midnight Turn Left Stolen Earth (I agree the first part is excellent.) The Lazarus Experiment The Sound of Drums (again good episode if you discount the finale.) Blink Satan two parter (despite the smug schmoopiness of Ten and Rose.) Army of Ghosts/Doomsday (again despite the romance and awful use of the Cybermen, it's a good story overall.) Daleks in Manhattan/Evolution of the Daleks Fires of Pompei
Average/Okay/Enjoyable
Tooth and Claw Gridlock Planet of the Ood Planet of the Dead Runaway Bride Voyage of the Damned School Reunion Cyberman two parter in season 2
Everyone involved should be exterminated (apart from lovely Freema of course LOL.)
Unicorn and the Wasp The Doctors Daughter Love and Monsters 42 New Earth The Idiot's Lantern Partners in Crime Journey's End Last of the Time Lords The End of Time The Christmas Invasion Whatever that one with the drawings coming to life is?
Overrated as f*ck.
Human Nature/Family of Blood The Girl in the Fireplace

I'm not saying The Web Planet is better than Blink or Gridlock, but compared to The Idiot's Latern, Fear Her and Love and Monsters it's a masterpiece Girl in the Fireplace is a strange one. I think it's better the Empty Child, but not as good as Blink. I discovered this video last night which is actually quite interesting:

I think it's better the Empty Child, but not as good as Blink. I discovered this video last night which is actually quite interesting: Well obviously Love and Monsters is nasty, mean spirited, up its own arse and moronic, so yeah The Web Planet is better in that it's innocent and genuinely imaginative, just too ambitious. Similarly I think that with the right budget, better pacing and acting, Web Planet could not only have been good, but a classic, which can't be said for drek like the Idiots Lantern, New Earth and Fear Her that are just bad ideas. However The Web Planet is more of a chore to get through than those other stories as it's a 6 parter so I can understand people dreading it on a rewatch more than a shitty Tennant episode. Even splitting it into two or 3 parts still makes it a chore as you know it's not going to be done for a few nights LOL. Again I'm not someone who has a problem with longer stories. I can watch the War Games in one sitting because it's such a brilliant story. The Web Planet really just is that bad. Meanwhile Human Nature well I try not to be as confrontational about it any more, as in all fairness despite my dislike for Cornell, that story in particular doesn't have an obnoxious fandom like say Missy, who try and bully you into liking it or else you're a sexist. Actually a lot of fans of it tend to just get upset when I slag it, but not in an obnoxious way. I understand as nobody wants someone just picking a thing they like apart, but since we know each other that's what I'll do here, though if you don't me want too, then just look away, or if you think my points are a steaming pile of horse shit LOL pick them apart. To start with none of it makes any sense? Why does he run away from these aliens to be kind to them, and then flip a switch and condemn them to the worst fates imaginable? He looks like an unpredictable psycho, and a gigantic hypocrite considering a few episodes later we have him hugging his psychotic archenemy. Why didn't he just lock the Family up somewhere humanely where they could die peacefully? Why also did he hide in the early 20th century, where the humans wouldn't be able to defend themselves if the aliens showed up, and where his black, female companion would obviously be a second class citizen? Why not the year 5 billion where Martha will be fine and the humans could take out those little pricks no problem? Also why hide in any one time since these aliens are time travellers? He could literally wait out his entire life and they could then show up, with it only being a few seconds for them? Also why would he make himself more vulnerable by turning himself into a human? If the aliens showed up, he'd have no way of protecting himself, and the watch also has no security system or anything. It literally fell into the hands of a child? Never mind the aliens, that watch could have changed the course of history even if those aliens hadn't shown up and something happened to the Doctor and Martha and it was left behind, as apparently opening it gives you the knowledge of a time lord? Yeah great time to leave it in, just before WW1. Also why would the Doctor create a new sentient life form for Martha to spend months with, getting to know and then kill? It's like something Rick Sanchez would do, not the Doctor. Also where the f*ck does he get those powers at the end? How can he trap people in mirrors? Why does locking someone in unbreakable chains make them live forever? Also again why does the Doctor want to do that? Why does also want to desecrate the bodies of their victims? The little girl whose parents will want to know what happened to her? Why let them never find out, so he can torture an alien, who though evil was at least just motivated by a desire to live, whilst he gives hugs to the Master a sadistic, mass murdering psycho who has killed grannies, blown up a quarter of the universe, eaten cats, sliced up old ladies, and orchestrated a genocide and tortured his friends and their loved ones because................ I'll give you the ending about WW1 does evoke some emotions, but to be honest given what a tragedy WW1 was, it's not hard to make a moving scene out of it. Also I might add that it actually has very little if anything to do with the main plot unlike Blackadder? It is literally just thrown in at the end for the feels. Also I don't like Joan, Jessica Hynes whilst a good comedy actress I think is awful, overdoing the breathy and trying to look deep angle. Her and John Smith's romance also happens too quickly to be honest. They've been together for like a day and act as though they are in love. It's a bit of the Harry Enfield "you loved her didn't you?" cliche. I also really hate the treatment of Martha from all the characters, Forced into an awful position against her will, again subject to racist and misogynistic abuse and made to feel as though she is the villain of the piece by Joan and John Smith. (I really wanted to give the Doctor and John Smith a ruddy good punch on the botty for treating Freema like that. That began my desire to protect her speaking as a male feminist myself LOL.) Also it's not the most original story. Hero finally becomes a human, or normal and lives a happy life and meets a girl, but oh no baddies show up and want to take over the world, so he's torn between that life and being a superhero and obviously chooses being a superhero. Superman 2/Spider-Man 2/ the Xena episode where history is rewritten so she never became a warrior and she has a normal life/ The cheesy Angel episode where Buffy shows up and he becomes a human etc. It's been done a million times before. Now again as we've been over in the Cybermen/Borg thread you don't have to be original all the time of course, but in this case I don't think Human Nature really adds anything new to this story. In fact it's probably the worst take on it. The way he becomes human is more ridiculous than the others. It makes more sense for Superman to have a machine that can do that as he lives among humans, whilst Spidey's is psychological, Angel is attacked by creatures who want to make him human by getting him out of the way, and Xena is simply put through a game by the gods. The Doctor however? Where did he get this machine? Why does it even exist? Seriously what possible reason could a time lord have to turn themselves into a human? Why a human of all species in the universe? Also even if it was to hide, why change themselves mentally and make themselves more vulnerable? Also as we've been over his motives make no sense and turn him into a villain protagonist. Also the Doctor doesn't suit this type of story either. Angel is a cursed immortal, who was once human. Superman has been raised among humans so it makes sense he would want to fit in. Spider-Man again, once human, lives among us, has a normal life he'd want to live, even Xena she's erasing her evil, wicked past so it makes sense she'd embrace that. The Doctor was never a human and had a better life LOL, being a Time Lord. All the crap of "the Time Lord can never have a life like that" during the cheesy montage where we see him getting married and having kids (with a woman he's just started dating. There is being too keen you know.) He DID have a life like that LOL. What about Susan? Again if that were Angel who has been a vampire for 200 years, or Xena a bloodthirsty warrior on the road, fair enough, but they seemed to forget the Doctor just isn't that type of character. Also I might add that his human counterpart, John Smith was annoying and thoroughly unlikable. He let a child be beaten, was a racist git to Martha and he and Joan were an awful smug couple. At least I was rooting for Spidey, Xena, Angel and Supes to have their normal lives, with John Smith I couldn't wait until the whiny, racist f*cker was off my screen. Okay you can argue that John Smith was a man of his time in those respects, but even then, he's presumably meant to be created from the Doctor, so wouldn't he have the same independent, free spirit, not conforming to society's bullshit that the Doctor is defined by? At least you know to the point where he isn't letting kids be beaten, or treating his friend like a second class citizen because of her skin pigmentation? I really struggle to think of anything good. I suppose the Scarecrows maybe, but even then, no explanation as to why there are so many of them, and why putting your hand straight through one does nothing, but tiny bullets stop them dead in their tracks.

No, all those criticisms are completely justified. I think it's more a case of me ignoring them just because I enjoy the story so much. The wet, sleepy, green countryside area in the middle of November, the family themselves, Tennant's performance, Gold's score, the slower pace of part one, the general feel of a pre war Britain on the eve of the dark days... it just appeals to me. That and the nostalgia of watching part two at the time. It's odd because I have so many fond memories of watching Series 3, but I never actually saw Human Nature when it was broadcast because I was on holiday at the time.

Honestly Maxil can I just say that is so refreshing to hear. So much a better response than trying to make out the other person is just too stupid to understand the genius of the story, or that they are being a miserable bastard for pointing out its flaws. Of course that's not to say that sometimes a plot hole might not be quite as big as the person thinks, or that you can't use a bit of head canon and leeway to explain plot holes. Still yeah sometimes you have to admit that actually the plot is a garbled mess, but I like it for other reasons.
I'm like that for Merlin. The premise for Merlin is a convoluted mess that makes 0 sense in a lot of ways. For instance how the hell did Uther (Tony Head's character) who hates magic get rid of it in Camelot when every week he falls victim to the most basic punk arse sorcerers and witches? Still I enjoy the show for other reasons, like its beautiful colours, sets, costumes, great performances and some other interesting concepts and ideas.
Still I do maintain that to put Human Nature alongside stories with much tighter, more well thought out premises like say Genesis of the Daleks, or Inferno as the fans do is annoying as ultimately whilst something doesn't have to have a great plot to be enjoyable, something that manages to do both deserves more credit.
Of course everything will have plot holes and conveniences as well if you look too closely. Like for instance in Genesis why don't the Time Lords just kill Davros when he's sitting on the crapper LOL. However everything else about the story largely holds together and we don't get the Doctor doing outright psychotic, or stupid things to justify moving the plot along. Not killing the Daleks, even if you disagree with it, you can understand where he is coming from as opposed to making Martha endure racist abuse in the 1910s. The Time Lords plot hole can also be handwaved a bit by "maybe they only have the power to go back this far, or maybe if you kill Davros another will pop up to take his place, and if they tried to change the entire history of the planet directly that would set a bad precedent. They want to work it out in secret and send the Doctor who can be a good fall guy in." etc.
Human Nature however again is just riddled with plot holes as we've been over, with the Doctor, Martha, and the villains actions making 0 sense, but it's refreshing for someone just to say "Yeah I know that, but it's enjoyable anyway." I wish we saw that more often.

Short and to the point. A commendable overview. Might be worth getting in touch with Tim Hirst to see if he wants to publish it...

Not sure if I can do this, but I'll give it a go. For me, the category of 'Classics' doesn't exist for NuWho, and Tennant in particular is largely just annoying, so my categories are personalised. OCCASIONALLY BEARABLE FOR CERTAIN *REASONS* (bracketed)Doomsday (Daleks) [Also, stop watching before Rose's leaving scene, or you'll vomit]
Daleks in Manhattan/Evolution of the Daleks (Daleks)Rise of the Cybermen/The Age of Steel (Not seen it for years, but liked the basic premise, and recall Tennant was more toned down)
Blink (Weeping Angels were a good idea, and Tennant isn't in it that much)Turn Left (Tennant isn't in it that much)
Human Nature/The Family of Blood (Tennant is mostly playing John Smith instead of the Doctor)The Sontaran Stratagem (Not seen it for years, but I recall the Sontarans/Chris Ryan being ok)The Next Doctor (Morrissey is better than Tennant)The Stolen Earth/Journey's End (Total pish, but Julian Bleach was reasonable as Davros)Army of Ghosts (Cliffhanger only) DREARY TEDIUM THAT GAVE ME THE URGE TO RUN THE HOOVER ROUND.Utopia (To be fair, Jacobi was ok, but overall the episode was meh and I've never felt like rewatching it)The Idiot's Lantern Smith and Jones Tooth and Claw The Doctor's Daughter Love & Monsters (At least Tennant wasn't in it much)The Christmas Invasion The Fires of Pompeii CAN'T REMEMBER BEYOND TENNANT BEING AWFUL, SO MUST'VE BEEN EVEN MORE BORING (Chronological):Fear Her The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit The Runaway Bride The Shakespeare Code Gridlock The Lazarus Experiment 42 Planet of the Ood The Unicorn and the Wasp Midnight Planet of the Dead Waters of Mars UNWATCHABLEThe Girl in the Fireplace (Emo wank)Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead (Mostly just crushing tedium, but singled out for shitting out River Song upon us all)
Voyage of the Damned (Why am I still watching this shit?)New Earth (When hope faded, as it became no longer possible to blindside the crap)School Reunion (Like finding Liz Sladen in a particularly degrading video on Pornhub)Partners in Crime (Makes S24 look like S7)The Sound of Drums/Last of the Time Turds (A Master every bit as bad as Tennant's Doctor. A perfect match of king size turds)The End of Time (Just stop crying and f*ck off, FFS!)
Did I miss any? I feel I've given the Tennant era the disrespect it deserves.

Did I miss Tennant encouraging the Menoptera to scream “ZAAARB-EEEEEEEEE!”? I need to bleach my brain now after having that disturbing and yet fully realisable vision enter it.
