Four versions of Silver Nemesis is the clincher for me. I'm not sure why they made a fake Christmas omnibus of it, though. One of the problems people had with it was that it jumped around too much and left a lot of extra detail on the cutting room floor. Making it even shorter seems pointless to me. Still, I'm curious about it.

Can't believe how good this set is. So much effort has gone into the special edition versions. I can't wait to watch them properly. There's also a ton of footage I've never seen before. Very exciting stuff.

Silver Nemesis - Special Edition
A fun watch with a few issues. Some scenes are still omitted for "pacing" reasons which I don't get, but the narrative is restructured which is justifiable as certain scenes in the original version were out of order anyway. I like the feel of it and the additional material gives it a lot more depth. Unfortunately, the inclusion of the Cybermats is a mistake. They replace the gas pipes in part one, but the scenes feel like a fan film. It doesn't mesh well with the outside broadcast footage at all. They would have been better off not including them in my opinion. The special effects are also quite iffy with the new spaceship flying through a clear blue sky despite the fact that it's always cloudy in those countryside scenes. Despite all the flaws I love seeing the deleted stuff, some of which I don't think has ever been released either on DVD or the old VHS version.

So there's the broadcast version, the Special Edition, the omnibus version...what's the fourth? Is it the VHS version?* *Assuming it and the Special Edition aren't essentially one and the same...

Indeed it is and to be honest, after watching the Special Edition, I think the VHS version is the definitive version.

I don't understand... cybermats replace the gas pipes? On the Nemesis ship? Which has... nothing to do with the Cybermen?
Is this another "put in laser beams because we're so dumb we don't get that the shaking is from the underground drilling" Destiny moment?

Is this another "put in laser beams because we're so dumb we don't get that the shaking is from the underground drilling" Destiny moment? Ian, Ian, Ian. Doctor Who sets always wobbled and it behoves those with greater judgement and artistic gifts to patch over the incompetence of the wretched hacks who made the original run of Doctor Who such an artistic and commercial failure. For 26 years...

Remembrance of the Daleks - Special Edition
It would have been hard to mess up the best story ever made even for this Blu ray team! I really like this version of the story. None of the deleted scenes add much to the narrative, but they're still fun to watch. There are also some minor changes such as the An Unearthly Child song playing on the jukebox in the Cafe and the missing E finally being included on the gate of Foreman's yard. The new special effects are still a bit ropey, though. I'd even go as far as to say the original 1988 effects were much better. Apart from that there's not much to complain about. It won't replace the televised version, but I can't imagine not being tempted to give this another watch in the future.

The omnibus is a trimmed version of the special edition. I'm quite sure what they were thinking with that. On the plus side, there's an hour of serene shots of Windsor Castle on a cloudy day in 1988. The cameraman managed to get some footage of Concorde, too. This stuff is like a gateway into the past.
