Awww I liked Ian's crappy dancing haha with the space monsters book in his hand. I do admit that Beatles cameo was the closest Old Who came to RTD's pandering to the modern zeitgeist in terms of having celeb cameos and whatever was trendy at the time thrown in there without any real reason. Even then though I think that old who did it better. They at least picked The Beatles, who love them or hate them, where a big band that was clearly going to be remembered for decades to come. Again biased, but the Beatles clip in the Chase would be like if RTD had an Amy Winehouse song, or a Gaga song, or hell even a Beyonce song for all I dislike her, playing in one scene. Even on that shallow score though RTD still manages to f*ck it up by picking things nobody will remember in like 3 years, such as The Weakest Link, Trinny and Suzannah, the X-Factor. Also at least that was just a clip and not an entire episode based around it. I never saw it as pandering to the modern zeitgeist. On the one hand, it provides an glimpse and a reminder into Ian and Barbara's own lives before they left the 60s as well as their cultural differences with Vicki. Plus, as opposed to worshipping celebrity, Nation takes the piss out of it by presenting the idea of the Beatles having their own museums in the future being a load of fantastical bollocks given that many thought that they would be another ''here today, gone tomorrow'' pop act that would fade into obscurity and irrelevance after the 60s ended. Besides, I'd much the series championing Lennon/McCartney/Harrison/Starkey than Trinny and Suzannah and f*cking McFly. At least the former had talent. I don't think Nation was trying to take the piss out of the Beatles. After all the original intention was for them to be in it as old men. (It's a good thing they didn't do that given what happened to Lennon and Harrison.) Also John Lennon posed with a Dalek, so I don't think there was any hard feeling there. Can you get anymore 60s than this picture LOL. Well 60s UK. Again I think it was Old Who trying to cash in on the zeitgeist, but as you said they at least went after genuinely talented musicians, rather than twattish quiz show hosts like Anne Robinson and genuine here today, gone tomorrow celebs like Trinny and Suzannah.

And they're doing it again with Davina McCall!

Oh no, not the Beatles AGAIN! Not only is RTD determined to destroy Dr Who once and for all, but now he's trolling me personally...
If there were any justice he'd do to them what he's done to the show!

Im just hoping Jinkx Monsoon isn't the Rani.
It's bad enough the Master becoming a Joker knock off but to see the amoral chemist turned into a pantomime villain would be just sad.
Also, if true, take not that the Rani has potential been made a Drag Queen and not an unambiguous male incarnation.

I remember older versions of this forum being anti-Beatles to the point where they were often referred to as the C*ntles by certain members. I've always admired them hugely. Burrunjor is probably the biggest fan on here, but I've always found their stuff quite enjoyable to listen to. Saying that, I do much prefer The Shadows when it comes to Sixties music.

It's good music but it is a bit soppy and toothless at times, as well as being fairly gentrified due to its reputation as "art" music. Obviously the guys themselves were all scallywags but their canon has fallen largely into the hands of snooty and sycophantic music students who overstudy a collection of what are ostensibly half-decent ditties written by some blokes who couldn't really play their instruments. Again, it's good music but it's hardly Beethoven. This is why I find the concept of studying modern music rather preposterous, with the exception of jazz; it's all a declension of the classical tradition and you'd be better off looking to Bach for advice on secondary dominants, which he used in literally every piece he wrote, than the Beatles who used them once or twice (to great acclaim by hipster music students, I might add). Really where the Beatles succeeded is in the area of music that warrants little to no study at all, that which concerns the synthesis of apparently daft and defunct ideas that manage to somehow come together and defy the screwed-up faces of music theorists all over the globe; a.k.a. the bits that don't make musical sense, per se. There was a remarkable talent there for pure conception that was unfettered by theoretical bonds, something that a snooty hipster could not acquire in a lifetime of study.

There was one member who disliked them even more - he used to stay seated during 'Mull Of Kintyre' when they played it at football matches! And technically that's by Wings, not the Fab Four. A shame that he passed away, I got on with the guy...

That's him! I remember we used to laugh at similar things, particular how crap Danny Pink was compared to the old UNIT - particularly when he wandered into the road and got run down by a car whilst daydreaming about how much he 'wuvved' Clara. 🤣

Am I right Maxil.
