You guys are insane, completely insane. Death to the Daleks is wonderful, it's got great ideas, set pieces, a swish new look for the Daleks. Why do people hate on it so much? It's at most a fairly average story. The idea that it is worse than 6 part insomnia cures like the Mutants or Invasion of the Dinosaurs is a joke.
Meanwhile whilst I'm sure I've done this before, as I did finish a Pertwee rewatch recently it's fresher in my mind so I'll go.
Classics
Inferno Silurians Terror of the Autons Day of the Daleks Frontier in Space Three Doctors Carnival of Monsters The Time Warrior Spearhead from Space The Daemons Curse of Peladon The Green Death
Fun
Planet of the Daleks Death to the Daleks The Sea Devils Claws of Axos The Ambassadors of Death The Mind of Evil
Guilty Pleasure
Monster of Peladon
Crap
Colony in Space The Mutants The Time Monster Invasion of the Dinosaurs Planet of the Spiders.
His best seasons are definitely 7 and 10, where there really isn't a bad story, whilst his worst are 9 and 11 where at least half of his stories are crap.

lol The idea that Death is better than Dinos is the joke, mate. It's a crock of shit, when you look at it.

Death to the Daleks had a fantastic idea in removing their ability to kill and forcing them to cooperate with the human survivors. So of course the Daleks immediately replaced their guns.
That, and it's set in a particularly crappy looking quarry. At least Colony in Space had the Master to spice things up just a little.

This requires some explanation. (Ah, whoops! I see Ian’s beaten me to this one!)

While I’m at it, here’s my entirely subjective listing, in chronological order:
Excellent
Spearhead from Space. The Silurians. The Ambassadors of Death. Inferno (arguably the most chilling Doctor Who story ever made. The sound design and inexorable tension are unmatched). Terror of the Autons. Day of the Daleks. The Time Warrior.
Competent to highly enjoyable
The Mind of Evil. The Claws of Axos. The Daemons. The Curse of Peladon. The Sea Devils. The Three Doctors. Carnival of Monsters. Frontier in Space. Planet of the Daleks. The Green Death. Invasion of the Dinosaurs. Planet of the Spiders.
Lethargic to poor
Colony in Space (solid script, let down by a familiar premise and the Master’s appearance feeling shoehorned). The Mutants (see above, but with infinitely more awful acting and direction). The Time Monster (narratively laughable, albeit sometimes amusing). Death to the Daleks (a very sound premise and a superb opening episode, undermined by an ineffably bland guest cast, awful music and nondescript direction come the latter half). The Monster of Peladon (alongside the Mutants, arguably the dullest story of the era).

LMFAO at the idea that Death being set in a dull quarry would make it worse from a production point of view than Invasion, that has Dinosaurs that were pathetic even by the standards of the 1920s. Here watch this clip from The Lost World of a Tyrannosaurus fighting a Ceratopsian Dinosaur that was released in 1925. Made almost 50 years earlier and is vastly superior to DW's Dinosaurs in every way. Meanwhile the Exillons themselves, the spectacular looking prop for the city, the new and improved colour scheme for the Daleks, the tunnels, the inside sets of the city, the cool effect of the Exillon melting into his chair, the zombies that attack the Daleks, none of those count in its favor? You see that's what frustrates me here. Guys like Iank will just say Death is crap without any reason why, and then praise Invasion despite the ridiculousness of its premise, its characters and well everything? Seriously Death is a turd because it doesn't use the premise of the Daleks not being able to kill, despite devoting a whole episode to it, and still showing them to be vulnerable to the dangers of the planet in a way they wouldn't be otherwise like against the roots, the city, the zombies etc? Invasion meanwhile gets a pass for? Turning Mike into a genocidal maniac, and yes it does. All this he's just misguided is nonsense. He knows that the people he is working for are going to kill every single person in the world and every single person who has ever lived. So what if he thinks he is doing the right thing? So did Hitler! So did Davros! The idea as well that he gets let off with just a quiet retirement is also ridiculous. It also features human beings who can create time travel in the 20th century, which kind of cheapens the idea of it being this special thing that only a few species can create like the Daleks and obviously the Time Lords. What these humans from 20th century earth were more in advance than the Cybermen, or on a level with the Sontarans? Also how did they build it without government funding? We're getting into Rick and Morty level sci fi here. Dragged out to 6 episodes of back and forth in a deserted London with such ridiculous ideas as the Brig thinking the Doctor is a traitor to pad it out. It's preachiness is one of the few times the show reaches Jodie levels, with Jon Pertwee outright lecturing the audience at the end about pollution. Dreadful production values all around, not just the Dinosaurs, rubber sets that bounce and wobble, the awful effect at the end. Lead actors phoning it in, including even Liz Sladen and Jon Pertwee. Sarah's laid back reaction to being told they are going to kill everyone on earth "oooooh that's horrible" always makes me laugh. Honestly I think Invasion of the Dinosaurs praise is just an attempt to save face because it's such an obvious turkey and humiliation that can be used to demonise DW. If someone says DW is crap because of this story, then fans can say "oh no it's actually a deep adventure about pollution and extremism." In truth however, no it was a disaster in every way and fans should just admit it. This story is the Missy of old who, inexplicably popular among sections of fandom despite it being the absolute worst. I'd go as far as to say it's in the bottom 5 stories. It's not quite as atrocious as say The Twin Dilemma, which really is as low as old who got and is worse than anything in new who to be honest until season 8 (with the exception of Love and Monsters.) Still it's among them.

LMFAO at the idea that Death being set in a dull quarry would make it worse from a production point of view than Invasion, that has Dinosaurs that were pathetic even by the standards of the 1920s. I mean, what makes a story visually interesting is all subjective. I'd rather take crappy special effects in an otherwise spiffy-looking contemporary serial (+ UNIT) than a wet muddy field for several episodes. It's just my preference. The look of Death puts me off.

Apart from Invasion high up, best ranking so far. You don't like Planet of the Spiders either do you? Oh yeah, sorry skipped that one. It's awful. Again padded and boring, laughable effects, cheesy in places, uncomfortable moments between Sarah and the Doctor, and an entire episode that's nothing but a chase sequence. It's a real slog. Such a shame about Pertwee's last season. I think you can tell it was time for everybody to move on. Other than Liz Sladen, who obviously is at her peak and really game, everyone that year looks fed up, and even a bit sad after 5 years. Not surprising really given what happened to Delgado the previous year, and Katy leaving too. Really the only good stories that year are The Time Warrior and Death, I think because again they are by people who are a bit more enthusiastic. Terry Nation had just returned after a long hiatus and was re-energised in his love for the Daleks, whilst Bob Holmes was obviously about to reach his peak.
