I watched Holoship earlier. It's such a beautiful episode because of the music and the fabulous effects and sets. There are moments in the series that are geniunely moving and Rimmer's decision to give up his place on the ship for Jane Horrocks (who wants to have constant sex) is quite sweet for him. I do love the bit at the end where he quotes the cliched "we just won't be together" smeg and then grimaces because he knows how mushy it sounds. Great episode all around.

Well Rimmer is the sort of macho, hardened marine type you do NOT want to mess with, so I'm not surprised. Also he's had just tons and tons of girlfriends.

Does anyone else really like Series 3? Initially I found it a bit jarring after the first two, but I've come to really rate it. Six excellent episodes with the inventive Timeslides being the pick of the bunch. The thing about Red Dwarf is that a lot of the ideas are very ambitious and layered, but they've only got 28 minutes or so to tell the story. That's why I love the books because we spend much more time in the Better than Life game and the Backwards universe.

I like it, but it is very jarring in context. 5 is my absolute fave, though part of that is probably nostalgia for how I saw it (friend of mine sent me the tape from the UK and I watched the whole lot in one go Xmas 92. Was blown away by it, actually.)

The continuity seems to change after Series 2. I always found it strange that Kochanski became Lister's ex girlfriend rather than someone he admired after in Series 1.
Series 5 is very good. Series 6 is my absolute favourite, though.

Yeah, I never liked that change. It made no sense to me. Apparently they changed it because they thought it could be construed as creepy. FFS. Tbh I think changing it made Lister more of a loser, since he'd already got the girl and blown it rather than never having taken the chance and then regretting it.

They didn't think Lister was creepy, more just that he was immature as they felt that pining for someone you don't know that well was only something teenagers, early 20 somethings do rather than a guy approaching his 30s. To be honest though it was a pretty glaring plot hole. I mean in the end you let Red Dwarf get away with a blip like that because after all it's a comedy and silly, but even then it does kind of stretch credibility for the show as it undermines so much of series 1 and 2. Having said that I do think Lister having never had the courage to talk to Kochanski, is kind of out of character, as why would Lister have never tried? He was a fun, sociable, guy who had lots of girlfriends? The later characterisation did make more sense, but it was still a clumsy retcon.

I thought it made complete sense given he was like bottom of the pile on the ship, and she was one of the senior officers. It's easy to be fun and sociable on your own social level, but I can completely see that factor making him think she was out of his league.

I find it funny that there's an odd parallel between the Doctor and the boys from the dwarf. Yes he's smarter and more competent, but like them he's a social outcaste amongst his own kind, finding his true potential traveling the universe. Lister, Rimmer, Kryton and event Cat to a lesser extent, have all become so much more then they would have been because of their travels. It's oddly inspiring.
