Got a couple of Dinosaur fiction books I'd like to recommend to you all.
Carnosaur
Beating Jurassic Park to the punch, Carnosaur tells the tale of cloned Dinosaurs being unleashed upon the British countryside. Unlike Crichton book, which takes a greater intreast in the science, ethics and effects of such a thing, Knight's book has more in common with 80s animal attack novels such as The Rats, Night of the Crabs and Slugs. The creatures for horror purposes, and to great effect. You'll also find a lot of Dinosaurs not commonly used in fiction at the time or even for quite a few years, it even beats Jurassic Park to the punch again thanks to the inclusion of Deinonychus. Yet like JP, Carnosaurs Dinosaurs feel like real animels instead of killing machines. The characters are all pretty likeable and in pulp horror style, theres even a few parts are rather saucy.
A well written books with Dinosaurs, horror, gore and sex, set in ol blighty, what more do you want?
The Dinosaur Four
This book is really trying to do something different from your standerd fare in the genre. A group of people who are in the wrong place, at the wrong time, end up teleported back into the Cretaceous, along with the shop they were standing in. Now this unlikely group must survive in a world none of them are equipped to survive in. Unlike pretty much all such stories, not a bloody soul in our group knows a thing about dinosaurs beyond what they saw as a kid, their is no Alan Grant or Nick Cutter style character for them to fall back on. They are also not a group of friends or people who wanted to be there, their all strangers with mixed personalities, ripped from their own world. As you can guess theirs a lot of group conflict as a result, and not every one is quite what they seem at first. Most importantly the book tries it's hardest to create as realistic a depiction of the Cretaceous as possible, as was known when it was written, while still hitting all the high points of being a fun dinosaur thriller.
A great book thats succeeds in rising above the rank and file of it's kind.
The Quintaglio Ascension Trilogy
A series of books that revolve around a race of sentient tyrannosaurs, the Quintaglio, who explore and uncover the secrets of their world. What they discover makes them question everything they thought they knew about their planet, universe and very existence. Hight concept sci-fi at it's best, this trilogy depicts very well written, known human characters, in a society somewhat familiar yet very alien to out own. There is way to0 much for me to go into with these books, the best I can do is provide some s slight overview of the themes, yet even that dose not do them justice.
Far-Seer has events that mirror Galileo's discoveries, Fossil Hunter those of Charles Darwin, while Foreigner has more of a loose connection to various sailing explorers and their encounters with people of unknown lands. These however are but a fraction of what the books deal with.
Primitive War
During the height of the Vietnam War, a team of solders, Vulture Squad, are sent into a valley to track down a missing team. What they find however, are primitive horrors that will push even these battle hardened warriors to their limit. A great book that is the definition of not f*cking around, Primitive War doesn't pull it's punches with it's depictions of the Vietnam conflict, the effects such diabolical warfare can have on the human mind and truly terrifying nature of Dinosaurs. Every member of Vulture Squad is a fascinating yet broken individual, each carrying unique scars from the war. The dinosaurs put pretty much put to shame any other depiction I know of to shame in the sheer savagery and shit your pants scary departments. Perhaps the books best asset though is the constant threat of death that hangs over it. None is safe, and the book makes shore you care about this motley crew enough that the deaths sting when they come.
A pretty special books and much better then pretty much any Dinosaur books tied to wars I can think of, save maybe The Land That Time Forgot.
