Well I can see there's a clear cut runaway victor in this one.

Well I can see there's a clear cut runaway victor in this one. I feel a bit sorry for Claws. It was another I read the novelization of from our local library before I saw it, and being particularly fond of its idea...

Yeah I like Claws myself, it's just that smidgeon not as good as the other three. In a lot of other seasons it would fare a lot better.

Well I can see there's a clear cut runaway victor in this one. TBH I think this season gets a hard wrap. It suffers coming after the magnificent season 7, which is one of the best seasons in anything. However I think that there is a lot to enjoy even in the supposedly poor episodes. Colony in Space for instance was a lot better than I remembered.

I feel so lucky having grown up on seasons like this. I was 7 and 8 when S8 was broadcast, and it was pretty scary shit. The idea that supposedly harmless plastic flowers were being distributed in their thousands, that could suffocate unsuspecting members of the public, leaving no trace, was utterly terrifying. Also, I can remember being scared shitless of the Mind of Evil. Just that sound it made was enough. Lol

Lol Yeah, I think I remember seeing the opening seconds of "Claws of Axos" - The sight of the Axos suddenly lurching forward. I couldn't watch it. It was too shit my pants scary and I was really young at the time. I think I recall seeing the repeat of "Mind Of Evil" too, but basically I couldn't watch the programme properly because it was just too frightening until the following year and even then, I didn't start watching regularly until Season 10.

What a wonderful era for the program, where the season introducing Delgado's Master is seen as a slight step down in quality! I always felt The Mind Of Evil got overshadowed by some of the other stories, but there was a time I couldn't stop rewatching it on YouTube - even tho it was in black and white. Love the bit where the Brig dramatically announces "We've got real trouble this time - the Chinese delegate's dead!". Also the 'wow-wow-wow' noise the machine makes is spooky in the way only early 70s sound effects could be!

It's not as good as 7, granted, but I don't think there's a bad story here at all. Delgado's Master is f*cking awesome, and despite gradually distancing itself from the straight laced grittiness of Pertwee's first outing, the overall production and direction is still slick, and as you say, noticeably polished. I voted for the obvious candidates. But I reckon it's a sorely underrated season, and far from any kind of "low-point".
