11 Stories You Like That Sheep Say Are Shite

This is not so much a list thread as such. Just share 11 stories you like that the general who community tell you should hate.

1) An Unearthly Child - Hated primarily for it's caveman sections, I've never understood the hate. It's a fun starter story to introduce us to the characters and series. There's a lot of great character moments throughout and is a key part of developing the group dynamic throughout first season. Skipping from episode 1 to Daleks is hardly satisfying as you bypass all the ground work this story lays. 

2) The Keys of Marinus - While not the strongest story this season, I found Marinus to be a very fun story over all. It also makes a nice sci-fi sister story to Marko Polo

3) The Senioritis - While probably the weakest story of the season, an possessing a slightly of it's time moment, over all its an ok, if more relaxed sci-fi tale 

4) The Dominators - A pretty good story in my eyes, just a bit slow in places and a few poor choices.

5) The Web Planet - Again a bit on the slow side at time, but I love wonderful bit of experimental 60's tv. 

6) Invasion of the Dinosaur - A truly amazing story.

7) The Power of Kroll - Another I've just never understood, I loved this story when I first watched it and still do.

8) The Horns of Nimon - Watched this recently and found it to be pretty fun, a bit cheap looking but then if your going to hold that against Doctor Who you might as well watch none of it.

9) Attack of the Cybermen - WTAF, How this story gets shat on I'll never know. Then again if TimeScales website is anything to go by, any story that bothers to take advantage of the shows rich history to try an craft a more in depth plot is automatically shite. f*ck off.

10) Paradise Towers - Watched this for the first time about 3 years back and it just resonated with me.

11) The Celestial Toymaker - A flawed but imaginative work that I feel has had some of it's negative aspects blown out of proportion by certain sections of fandom. It has them sure, but there are a lot of exaggerations and outright lies spouted about it also.

1) Marco Polo - Because most have never bothered watching it due to being a recon.
2) The Abominable Snowmen - Ditto.
3) The Time Monster - This used to get some shit, but is actually really entertaining as far as Pertwee adventures go.
4) The Ribos Operation - Is not disrespected per se, but it's one of the wittiest scripts of the whole series and should get more love.
5) Shada - The best Fourth Doctor story.
6) Full Circle - A story without a villain is rare.
7) Planet of Fire - I enjoy seeing Davison and Turlough work on their own, plus it's a fun holiday story with Davison at his peak.
8) Paradise Towers - Immensely entertaining
9) Delta and the Bannermen - Eccentric, but enjoyable.
10) Silver Nemesis - Genuinely better than Remembrance.
11) Battlefield - Love the twist that there's magic in a parallel universe. It's so inventive.

I loved to know why you think that. I think it's a wonderful story as well with some great humour and Cybermen looking their slick and shiny best. I also love stories that take place in green spaces. I do think Remembrance is more dramatic, but Nemesis is a real treat.

Why Battlefield is hated is quite beyond me. Do fans just hate anything that's remotely fun?

There's more variety. In Remembrance, it's two clans of Daleks. Which is interesting I suppose, but in Silver Nemesis, you have the Nazis, you have the Cybermen and you have Lady Peinforte (who has her own mystery going on).

Plus, the concept of the Doctor having long prepared for this particular battle is imo handled better in Silver Nemesis.

Struggling to think of eleven stories I like that most consider shite but anyway here's a handful that just might fall into that category...


The Chase may be easy to mock but actually some fantastic ideas make this story more imaginative than often thought. By the way, there's an interesting video on YouTube by Dalek63-88 that raises some quite thought provoking implications regarding the Doctor's time and space visualiser - the video's called "Time Television: Lost Lore and Design Development" and I'd definitely recommend it.
Now I like The Krotons even though it doesn't get much love but admittedly there may be some nostalgia at play here as I still fondly remember its inclusion in the Five Faces of Doctor Who season of repeats back in 1981. Similarly, I am always gripped by An Unearthly Child  and not just its first episode. So I've never shared the contempt that some fans have expressed for those cave man episodes.
Then there's Death to the Daleks and Revenge of the Cybermen - a couple of oft despised stories but personally I always enjoy 'em.
Not many seem to like Power of Kroll but I think it's got some good points (or tentacles). I'd really like to see it get a blu ray release one day so it's admittedly flawed effects can be smoothed over with optional new effects allowing for fairer consideration.
Ditto The Time Monster and Invasion of the Dinosaurs.
The Leisure Hive doesn't get much love here. Personally I'd praise it's startlingly refreshing style and, like it or loathe it, few can deny that it makes a dramatic change from the previous transmitted story, Horns of Nimon! Too dramatic a change for some perhaps but I'm not dismissing those who defend Nimon as even that has charms of it's own too.
Of course there's also some stories that many celebrate whereas I might not like them or at the very least just consider them overrated. Not sure I'd label the majority opinions here as sheep  although  sometimes I can feel a bit in the minority when most fellow hivers might adore some stories that I don't (and of course vice versa). What I do like here though is that actually we can all have at least some differing views and also we're usually all united to some extent by liking the classic series even with differing preferences therein. Many here love the 80s era for example considerably more than I do - I'm more your 70s era fan myself but at least we can all agree to disagree and respect each others likes and dislikes even when vehemently disagreeing at times. It's good because occasionally I can be inspired  by some one's enthusiasm about something I've never enthused about before. This enables some stories previously ignored or dismissed to be reassessed.
