I bought the audio version of the Earthshock target novel the other day. I started listening last night. At first it was going well, Peter Davison was going a great job of narrating the story, but then something happened. Something that made me turn of the story and refuse to listen to it’s for today.
When we got to the reveal of the Cybermen, they were being described is wonderful detail, and then they spoke.
The spoke with the voices of the Cybassmen of nuwho.
That really pissed me off.
I don’t generally care when Daleks have Briggs’ voice in audio. I never really viewed the Daleks as a whole to have certain voices. It only really applied to individuals. But the Cybermen are another story. Each group is Cybermen have their own distinct voices. The Mondas ones were high pitched and whiny, the Telos ones were very synthetic, the invasion and revenge ones were more human with a machine filter and the 80’s were deep, rich and filled with character.
So when you’ve got their dialog, with the descriptions of the 80’s voices, being said in the crappy mono-ton of the modern ones… well disappointment and rage were bound to follow.
It just doesn’t sound right at all, the Cybassmans voice just cannot produced the character needed for these lines. Excellent has never sounded so flat.
Apparently Briggs was going to try and do an 80’s voice, which if his Cyber Trilogy work for big finish was anything to go by is out of his range, but the BBC wanted the Cybassmen. Wither they are wankers or Briggs was so bad they tried to salvage highering him by making do a heavenly sythasized voice.
On that not it’s a real pisstake that one man should be the voice of every monster in audio productions.
Anyway it’s spoiled the story for me, I’m not shore I can even carry on listening.
