Look at this new spinoff for the show. Words can't describe it. www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2022/apr/29/doctor-who-redacted-transgender-podcastNow I am not having a go at the people making the podcast. Not heard it, can't judge it, and obvs I don't have a problem with gay/transgender leads. However to advertise that as being the main thing about this show to me suggests that identity politics is what it cares about more than you know the actual sci fi. Don't the marketing team get it? Does Jodie crashing to 2 million not show them that focusing on lecturing people rather than entertaining people is never popular?

Reading that article was painful, even for The Guardian. Were we all bad in a former life or something!?
And now they're having a pop at previous companions for being marginalised - yes, Dr Who was so much better when they were made the most important characters in the universe.
Harry Styles as an honorary lesbian? Alien penises in jars? And they even have cameos from the Bland Brigadier and the shit Victoria Wood Doctor. What did the LGBTQ audience do to deserve this?
Doctor Who: Retarded, more like.

LOL well I haven't heard the audio yet and I don't want to shit on it so I'll reserve my judgement, but the way this is being marketed is wrong. Who cares if it's a transgender or lesbian lead? Why can't they just adopt the Red Dwarf and Xena approach of we have these characters and that's that. It's incredible when you think of all the ways in which Lister and Rimmer have mocked each other in 30 plus years, all the different dynamics they've shared from brothers, to vitriolic friends, to enemies, to odd couple, to sexual tension (like the infamous kiss LOL) not ONCE has the fact that it's a white man and a black man ever been mentioned.
Why can't they all be like that? I'd understand if it was set in the 19th century and you had to address the racism of the times. Still ironically the SJWs or whatever you want to call them, often do it the wrong way round. They'll have f*cking black prime ministers in 19th century England, or an interracial relationship on the throne of England in the 6th century, whilst portraying people in modern day London as being white nationalists who spit at black people in the streets.
They get everything wrong.

Are they accidentally remaking "The Holy Mountain" (1973) in the context of Doctor Who? I guess that would make this far too interesting, mind you. At first glance, it sounds like Torchwood all over again...

Okay I'll admit that I didn't read the full article. I stopped when they talked about diversity hires, as that was enough. Just looked through it again. Jesus Christ it is worse than I thought!
I assumed Mott1 was just making a joke about alien pensis' in jars and the Harry Styles bit was something from the culture war. (Last year he wore a dress and the response on both sides was ridiculous, though worse from the right wingers who claimed he would destroy masculinity. Yeah because rock stars are always known for being manly aren't they? Mick Jagger, Freddie Mercury, David Bowie LOL.)
Still that it is actually in it!
Also check this out.
The high-stakes narrative is cleverly interwoven with the trio’s personal lives. Abby might have a controlling boyfriend (“the man-baby”) lurking in the background but she and Shawna have a sweet will-they-won’t-they romantic subplot. Despite class clown Cleo insisting she’s “only here for the sass, babe”, we learn that her mother kicked her out when she started to transition in her teens, but is now seriously ill and trying to reconcile. “It’s hard not to feel for Cleo’s character,” Craggs has said. “You’d have to be some sort of sociopath not to empathise with what she’s going through with her mum.”
She scripted four of the 10 episodes herself, with the rest credited to new writers – again, with a strong emphasis on diversity and regionality. With Redacted, bestselling author Dawson becomes the Doctor Who franchise’s first openly trans lead writer.
Whittaker has enthused about working with Dawson and Craggs, saying “their energy is ace”. Redacted is, indeed, irresistibly sparky. Characters are powered by protein shakes and oat milk lattes. Episodes run to a pacy 20 minutes. The dark conspiracy plot is leavened by a script that zings with Drag Race lingo and gags about alien penises in jars. Harry Styles is hailed as “an honorary lesbian”. “Live, laugh, love” culture and boomers who leave voicemails are roundly ridiculed. It’s like a sci-fi remix of Mae Martin’s Feel Good. Or It’s A Sin with aliens also saying “La!”.
Why do these people, who clearly have 0 interest in creating other worlds, races, monsters, concepts insist on dominating the genre to such an extent? Go write a soap opera, you clearly want to do that, but it seems like having to include the aliens and the monsters is the bit you find secondary and boring. Not such a good thing for DW. I'm amazed these people weren't made showrunners after Chibnall. They probably will be after RTD.

The mind boggles. Bad Wolf sure have their work cut out for them (that's assuming they'll even actually try).
