I've just watching this video on twitter showing a massive queue for a foodbank in London.
Now below it are the usual skeptical and denial comments such as "No shortage of Nikes and iphones" etc which you normally expect when this kind of topic surfaces, but the one which really struck me was a guy who tweeted, "They just need to vote Labour at the next election - problem solved" which I thought in some ways was an even bigger head in the sand assumption to the poverty deniers.
Whilst it's true that these people are hardly dressed in coal sacks or reduced down to Dickensian levels of poverty, people are forgetting that the Blairite establishment of Labour are complicit in this situation with their benefits bashing sanctions, workfare and overseeing the market conditions which gave raise to a ludicrously high housing market bubble which has made the average price of a house in the area where this foodbank is £450k, completely unaffordable even if you have a f*cking entry level job. Rents in the area are most likely well over a grand a month. Again, completely unaffordable for most entry level job wages.
So no, voting Labour as the way the party currently stands won't do a f*cking thing to stop this shit.
People just seem to be completely missing the economic levers which are causing food poverty, and it isn't iphones or branded clothes. If only it were that simple.
