I like the story myself mainly due to the direction and the atmospheric sewer scenes. It's obviously a Saward story which isn't a bad thing. I'd love to know why other members here rate it so highly. I've seen it in people's top tens. I wouldn't rate it that highly, but it's a good season opener all the same. And Peri looks smashing in both outfits.

Because it's awesome. The Cybermen are vicious, the guest characters and actors are all really good and memorable and have some cracking dialogue, and it's all really well made and looks great even today. IMO it's Colin's best performance too.

Although, I personally view it as a bit of a flawed Classic Story, the question which should be asked is "Why is Attack NOT so highly regarded around some sections of fandom?"
It has a bit of an irregular flow and the Cryons look crap, but other than that the good bits vastly outweigh the bad and it has some cracking action scenes.

It's one of the few Cybermen stories to really focus on the Cybermen.

As heretical as this may seem to Maxil, I actually prefer it to Earthshock.
The dialogue and characterisation is ineffably witty, the direction very solid (especially in the sewers), the Cybermen themselves are nary more brutal than they are here, the guest cast are excellent, and Colin Baker has already clearly found his feet. As often scorned upon as it is elsewhere, it's a sorely under appreciated gem.
How anyone can call it "difficult to follow" or "overloaded with continuity" whilst praising Series 12, or indeed the bulk of Moffat's later era, utterly baffles me.

Oh dear... Maxil may burn me at the stake then. I can't stand Earthshock!
Adric at his most insufferable, whole episodes spent mucking about in caves with some androids... Beryl Reid...

Could you imagine if as originally devised it had the reveal of the CyberController from The Invasion in it, instead of some crappy filing cabinet containing a distress beacon put there by Lytton?

It doesn't seem to be as popular as it used to be. It's still one of the better Davison stories although I don't think it's as good as McCoy stories like Remembrance, Greatest Show or Fenric.
