Ice Warriors vs Sontarans

After the Daleks, the Cybermen and the Master, come these two in a tied 4th place in the Doctor’s Rogues Gallary with four episodes a piece. Who’s your favourite?

For me is the Ice Warriors. They have a very cool and distinctive design, cool weapons, an interesting backstory and thanks to Curse of Peladon, they have more character range then the Sontarans tend to have.

I also feel the Ice Warriors managed to maintain their effectiveness throughout their appearances, while the Sontarans started great and sadly declined from there.

To be honest you make a compelling case for the Ice Warriors. Even Monster of Peladon didn't f*ck them up as badly as The Two Doctors did for the Sontarans. I actually prefer Two Doctors as a story overall, but the Sontarans are very badly handled in it.

That said though, The Time Warrior and The First Sontarans audio story are far better than any Ice Warrior stories. Also the Sontarans did have a more fleshed out backstory and lore than the Ice Warriors, like their war with the Rutans, and their design is maybe a little bit more creative than just a big lizard man, so ultimately I went with the Sontarans.

Sontarans: bar Invasion Of Time, all their stories in the CS are good (I know The Two Doctors relegates them to the sidelines a fair bit and people complain about them being 6ft 2 but even then they're still fun to watch)

The Ice Warriors is fun and a great debut (albeit my least favorite of the season) and Curse Of Peladon is alright but Seeds and Monster are dull as ditchwater and as Burun notes, they're not as conceptually interesting even if they look cool *wince*.

All very good points. In terms of design, its purely personal taste. I just prefer the lumbering lizards to the armoured potatoes. 

As for stories, Time Warrior is the best of the lot, I confess I have not listened to the First Sonatarans. I'm about to listen to some Ice Warrior audios soon so I'll see if any can match up in my estimation. Thats not to say I don't respect your opinion, please don't miss understand, I just want to judge for myself also. 

Your right in that the Sontarans have a much better set-up then the Ice Warriors, in just their first story no less. For my part though, what little we do learn of them in the original series is intreasting and provides them with a little bit more narrative potential then the Sontarans unusual have on their own. Are they from the era when their race was on the verge of extinction? From their acient glory days? Or are they from the new Federation era?  

Not that any of this invalids what you say, I'm just trying to explain my position on the matter.

I agree on Seeds, though I personally rather like Monster but then I'm aware I'm in the minority on that one.

Yeah I'd have to go for Sontarans if for nothing else than their stories are generally better.
