it's a good job Smith then announced in his tear-stained acceptance speech that he wanted to be a vessel for love. Ah, so he came out at the ceremony as well, then? So that's 2 out of 3 Hollywood requirements ticked off the list. I think it goes without saying that he "Struggles with mental health issues", so that that takes care of #3.
All in all though, bit of an unconvincing performance, wasn't it? Hardly Oscar-worthy. One can't help but wonder if he's only been given one because he's spent the last few years bitching that "people of colour" (read; Will Smith) never win any...
Smith: "The academy is racist!"
The Academy: "Have an Oscar"
Smith: "the academy is not racist"
The Academy: "Are you satisfied now?"
Smith: "Yes"
The Academy: "Will you complain if no black person ever wins an award again?"
Smith: "No"
The Academy: "I think we understand each other"
Couldn’t have summed it up more adroitly. On a genuine note: The joke Chris Rock told wasn’t exactly a witty, incisive or intelligent one, although broadly speaking, I have bugger all sympathy for Will Smith. The guy’s a shite actor and a very likely Scientologist in equal measure, and the notion that the “Smiths” are somehow underdogs in this scenario is laughable. They’re absolutely embedded within the Hollywood establishment and bauble, and like you say, his fixation on the academy is clearly solely to do with winning an award in order to satisfy one’s own ego. The man thinks he’s the dog’s bollocks, yet only ever plays himself in his films anyway. Hardly a method actor, is he?

Its good for soaking up Guinee pig piss and shite, he also takes rather joy in ripping it to shreds to. Typical Guinea Pig. If he were more discerning, he'd choose the Independent. But then he'd have to shit virtually. The Grauniad doesn’t quite irritate me as much as the Torygraph (it occasionally has a decent column hidden within), but it’s honestly not far off these days. It’s just as upper-middle class, pompous, and sneering and belittling of left-wing politics, albeit with the added touch of faux-progressive cultural gesturing. It’s the average Blairite’s wet-dream in newspaper format. Though the Independent occasionally irk with their painful defences of Starmer, they aren’t as bad as either of those.
