Finally submitted to my urges and got a Doctor Who: The Collection job lot for a couple hundred off eBay. The only seasons I'm missing are 2, 10 and 23 as well as 18 and 19 in their limited edition boxes. Some of these fetch preposterous prices though, so I'll steer clear for now. Nice work. Hopefully you'll be able to pick the others off in time. Especially S2 and 10.

Also went for the 9th and 10th Doctor Blu-ray box set.
Pros: The picture quality is gorgeous, and the FX shots in particular look so great compared to the crappy versions on the iPlayer. Sound is also in a great 5.1 mix, works perfectly with headphones and external speakers alike.
Cons: The box art itself is equal parts uninspired and uninspiring. Both Eccleston and Tennant look a bit awkward in their chosen photos and the blending isn't great. I'm also not at all a fan of the Blu-ray "rind" that comes on most cases. They really chose the most gaudy, ugly shade of blue lol. There are also no additional special features except for a featurette with RTD and Tennant which really isn't anything special. Confidential is on there, so are the video diaries, DW at the Proms, select commentaries, etc. But compared to the level of love and care that clearly goes into The Collection, there is just something really lacking here. Each story of the classic era is given a host of special features, a commentary or two, behind the scenes, PDF archives, all that good stuff. I'd like to see more of that for NuWho. How difficult would it be to get David Tennant and Billie Piper in a room for a couple of hours to talk bollocks over some DW episodes?
Still, I can't complain much. Like I said, picture and audio quality is great, best it's been since broadcast. They did also fix a few issues like the PAL format instead of NTSC, the framerate problems, etc.

"Uninspired and uninspiring." You could call it honest advertising.

They did also fix a few issues like the PAL format instead of NTSC, the framerate problems, etc. I had the initial Series 1 Blu ray. The picture was *slightly* better than the DVD, but not by much. The worst thing about the set though was the fact that every episode was slowed down so they lasted about two to three minutes longer than the broadcast versions did. They've corrected a lot of the issues in that new set that came out last year, but I'm not interested in paying out for it since none of the Series 2 or 4 discs will ever get a watch.
