Anybody seen this crazy sci fi film?
I got it over Christmas and I must say I enjoyed it a lot more than I was expecting. I'd seen it before over and though I enjoyed it when I was young, I felt it would be one of these films you like as a child, but think is silly grown up.
Personally though whilst it is still very silly LOL, I loved its imagination, cast and world. I was actually a bit sad there wasn't ever a tv show based on it, as I love the world and characters that much.
The real star is Gary Oldman. He is absolutely fokking hysterical as the villain. He is so OTT and ridiculous, from his accent to his hair cut, to his motivation for being a shit to even his name. Again though he's meant to be and that's what makes him so much fun.
Chris Tucker annoyed me though I will say.I liked him the Rush Hour movies. He went well with Jackie Chan, but in this one it was just too much. Any other fans of this film?
My one regret is that the big Dalek like golden robots from the start weren't in it more. There were among my favourites.

My one regret is that the big Dalek like golden robots from the start weren't in it more. There were among my favourites. Like you, I've only ever seen it as a kid, and I was always wary of approaching it again in case it failed to hold up successfully, because the tone and presentation is remarkably over the top from what I recall. The segments of the film which stand out in retrospect are the Chris Tucker musical numbers, which are fairly painful from what I recall (even as a kid, they seemed utterly superfluous to me), although the actual narrative and world building are solid enough from what I remember. I can't comment too avidly on it though, because I haven't watched it for well over a decade. I forgot that Luc Besson also directed "Léon: The Professional" though. Similarly bombastic and extravagant in places, and also starring Gary Oldman, but also very different narratively.

We were shown the film in my first year of college. Very entertaining apart from the rubbish Eric Serra score.

Hated it at the cinema, to be honest.
