A few years ago, I woke up blind after catching an eye virus. It lasted a few days. During that time, it was absolute hell. And living on my own made it so much harder. However, I could call my mother and she could do a few things for me, such as calling people who could come and help, etc.
Now that she is gone, it has made me worry. So I decided to focus my grief and be proactive. I invested in some smarthome gear, and now my little apartment is fully automated.
Here's what I've done so far.
1, Used a Phillips Hue bridge and wifi/zigbee lights to make the lights automated.
2. Set up a Google Nest mini, to add voice control to the lights. Honestly, it works wonders. And the Hue lights are amazing and can be changed easily for many of the different things I do. For example, I can switch them to pure white light for reading simply by asking.
3. Google now reads my schedule to me in the morning, and I've put reminders where important things are, making it easier for me to find them later on.
4. I set up a hub with an IR function, allowing me to turn on my appliances and control them by voice. So far, my TV, radio, air conditioner, fan, and security camera are all hooked up.
5. I bought a smart kettle/ coffee maker which means I can control it without having to see the tiny LCD screen or buttons. I've also automated it so that it brews fresh coffee upon my alarm going off in the morning.
6. I bought a wifi connected cooker, so I can again manage everything by voice control. It also allows me to set food cooking while I'm commuting home.
My next step is to get the washing machine hooked up, and purchase a robot vaccum cleaner. Then, I'm practically set.
One thing I've not put in is a camera for privacy, with the only camera being outside.
Any of you getting into smart home stuff?
