I know I'm a bit late to the party here, but I saw it yesterday. Someone got me it for Christmas, and whilst I'd obviously never say this to them LOL. It was awful.
I honestly think it might be the worst superhero film ever made and I'm not exaggerating.
Things that were shit in the movie.
As many have pointed out. Wonder Woman basically rapes a guy. Steve her love interests mind is put into the body of another guy who has no consent. Why they bothered with this when it was a wish that brought him back and therefore he could have just been resurrected, I don't know, but it's so f*cking creepy and awful it completely undermines the big romance they have.
It's far too long. The opening scene alone was nothing but self indulgent crap that had no baring on the story whatsoever.
The villains were lame. I was honestly laughing at Kristen Wig's character. Her big transformation from hideously ugly, to babe that could only apparently be achieved through magic, hence why she was wanting to sacrifice the world to maintain it, consisted of taking off her glasses and putting a bit of make up on! Ironically that in itself came over as extremely misogynistic, as basically if a girl has glasses and is a bit mousey, that's their idea of hideously ugly? Also she only became Cheetah for like 2 mins, the effects looked awful and the way the story is written, Wonder Woman's big archenemy can never return and only got a run of like 2 mins in the DCEU.
It was extremely misandristic meanwhile. Other than a little arab boy, every single person Wonder Woman saves is a woman. Often from an evil white men too. Then there was also her inspiration, a woman who saved the island of women from evil men who wanted to take over it. Also about 99 percent of the guys in this movie are misogynistic. We see guys bully Kristen for not being pretty and cat call her and try and feel her up when she stops being ugly (by taking her glasses off as we all know that's the ugliest thing a woman can wear.)
The performances were also all awful. The main male villain was too hammy, comical and stupid. Kristen Wig just faded into the background. Meanwhile Gal Gadot I have to say is a bad, bad actress. It's a shame as I did quite like her in the first movie and in that film with Ryan Reynolds and the Rock. However I've realised that in both of those films she was good, because the role was light hearted. Wonder Woman in the first movie was a bit of a Ducky type, sweet, cute, bubbly (which is what Gal Gadot seems to be in real life. According to everyone who works with her and even just the outtakes where you can see she has a very lovable goofy sense of humor). Meanwhile her character in the Rock movie, though a villain was also a jokey, humorous villain, and the movie overall was light and fun.
This film however called for Gadot to play an Angel/Xena type, IE a brooding immortal with a tortured past and she just wasn't up to it at all. She still came over as light weight, silly and lacking in gravitas. Anything even remotely serious she just delivered it in the same monotone.
I'm not saying she is a bad lead. You don't always have to be the best actor to be a good lead. She is gorgeous, charismatic, is believable in action scenes and her accent is awesome. These things get her by in a role her personality is a good fit for like in the first WW film and the Rock movie. However put her in something outside her comfort zone and unlike say Lucy Lawless, she just doesn't rise to the occasion. Having said that though, this was a f*cking awful film so who could blame her.
Also the cameo from Lynda Carter at the end was awful. Leaving aside the fact that Lynda Carter is a bad actress too. (Check out her obnoxious, smug performance based on warmonger, blood stained psychopathic, actual rape apologist Hillary Clinton in Supergirl.) It also completely undermines Wonder Woman as now it basically establishes that there was another Wonder Woman out there with the same powers all this time. (Who for some reason didn't help in either of those other two movies.)
Overall Wonder Woman 1984 just reinforces what a lot of people were saying that Patty Jenkins let the success of the first one go to her head. When she made that one, it was just an honest attempt at doing a good super hero movie. This one however? Clearly all the praise from people like Whovian Feminism and the toxic, poisonous Mary Sue websites that because Patty was a woman who directed a good superhero movie, that means she is Sylvia Pankhurst went to her head and the second one became a vanity project that was going to be for these people. IE now it to sum up the experience of being a woman in the toxic, evil white men's world and the result was a self indulgent, bigoted, poorly thought out piece of trash that to be honest should never have been released.
