So, I finally caved into the hype train and decided to watch this. And I am so glad I did.
I started this morning, and finished just now. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. It is just that good.
The premise is simple, with people in poverty being offered a lifeline to clear their debts by playing in some game tournament or other, but then it is revealed to have deadly stakes.
What made this for me is the real human interaction. The characters actions, motives and dialogue all felt real, like something you could imagine people saying in that situation. Episode 6 is by possibly the greatest bit of human drama I have seen in my life.
If you haven't yet seen it, I highly recommend you do.

I haven't used Netflix for some time now, admittedly (I've mostly been watching HBO dramas recently when it comes to contemporary TV drama), so I haven't seen this yet despite the discussion it's generated, but your assessment of it has intrigued me all the more. I'll definitely give it a look within the next few days.

There's just not enough diversity in it for me. A Korean show with an all Korean cast. Where are all the ethnics? It's just not good enough.

I like more escapist programs personally.
