I think he had something done to his face between that and AVTAK. That said, I enjoy him in the movie. I watched it a month or so ago and it's actually quite dark in places. I do love the music and the cinematography though. Also the Golden Gate Bridge fight is brilliant.

I actually prefer AVTAK to the Dalton films these days. I can't get into either of them anymore. At least View has Alison Doodly and better cinematography. They changed the director or photography for the Dalton films and they don't look as good as the three 80s Moore movies.

I still don't think Roger looks any older in AVTAK than Craig has since Skyfall...

It's a great film overall, and Roger just about pulls it off, but still some of the love scenes are hard to watch, even more so as Moore takes on an almost fatherly role to the Bond Girl at times LOL. I think Moore hated every minute of it and sadly whilst he doesn't exactly phone it in, part of that does translate to screen that this is a Bond who'd rather not be there. Ironically it's comparable to Pertwee's last season as there are parts of that where he again looks like he'd rather not be there and has just signed on for one more because he's popular and its a good gig. Moore was apparently a bit difficult to work with on set of A View To A Kill, which is the total opposite of what he normally is like. Normally he Peter Cushing and Laurence Olivier are the only three actors I keep hearing the best things about from their co-stars. He wasn't a bully or anything, but from what I've read, Roger was a bit more grumpy apparently. He also was bitchy to both of his female co-stars. I thought at first that might just be because Grace Jones, as much as I love her, is obviously a bit mad and might rub some people up the wrong way, but based on what I've read, it seems more that Roger was just in a bit of a bad mood. (Ironically both of his Bond girls still liked him and were shocked to hear that he had a bad time making the film later.) He comes over as being a bit more touchy here than he normally is. FFS the man worked with Tony Curtis who by all accounts was a total dickhead to everyone, so I can't imagine that Grace Jones was worse than that LOL. At the end of the day I think Moore was kind of forced into that one by popular demand, and never felt comfortable with it which coupled with his age makes it look even more awkward sadly. That said I do agree with your comments that it is better than Timothy Dalton, who I never liked as Bond. Dalton is a good actor, but to me he seems like the Eccelston of James Bond, IE the one that sucks all the fun out of it. His first movie is across the board shit. It can't be shown anymore because Bond works with the Mujahideen LOL. That should have served as a reminder to everyone not to link popular franchises to current events.

Yeah, Rambo III did the same thing a year later. Neither film has really aged that well.

It was them pandering to the snobs who hated Roger Moore, saying he made Bond too silly, so they wanted Dalton to not only be a miserable bastard, but be topical and relevant. Let's just say they put money on the wrong horse with the Mujahideen LOL. Meanwhile the silly Moore films like Live and Let Die and Spy Who Loved Me are still enjoyable 40, 50 years on and get shown every bank holiday.

This is really interesting stuff Burrunjor. I've always had a curiosity about Roger Moore, what a full, rewarding and colourful life he led! I think he really didn't want to do his final Bond film and I can see why, but it doesn't mean it's totally lacking in merit either. His self-effacing, dry humour often did his performances as Bond (and elsewhere) a disservice. He's as gritty as any of the other 007s when the part calls for it (look at him killing off the henchmen in TSWLM or FYEO), or how he treats the Bond women. I read an interesting account of him getting briefly caught up in the world of The Krays when his then-girlfriend, a singer, got drunk and into a kerfuffle in a club, and he made a run for it... P.S. Here's the Grace Jones vampire film if anyone's interested...
