I found myself wondering this the other day after watching some videos analysing the Incredible Hulk and how the character had been ever changing, with no true statuesque to fall back into. Also the Hulk, like the Doctor, has many different incarnations thanks to Bruce’s associative identity disorder. The Original Grey Hulk, The Green Hulk of the early comics, the Savage Hulk (The one everyone thinks of when Hulk is mentioned), the Mindless Hulk, Joe Fixit, The Professor (original the merged hulk), The Maestro, The Guilt Hulk, the Devil Hulk, the Green Scar and Doc Green.
While there is some rewinding and continuity issues cause by changing writers and time, the Hulk is an ever changing character with his only continuing aspects being that he is misunderstood, and thus must keep on the move, and the question that has haunted the character since his very first issue. Is he man, monster or is he both?
The Doctor is the same. As with the Hulk, their are aspects to his character that remain consistent, the Tardis, his companions etc, The Doctor himself and the types of stories told with him are always changing and developing as the show goes on, as new people came to work on it and with each actor who took on the role. It’s why we talk about era’s and why are favourite Doctor is. Not only this but as we talk about all the time, even with each Doctor, their eras will change and develop over time. It’s what makes the whole thing so special and it’s something nuwho lacks almost entirely.
