Apparently Davo didn't want Nyssa out after Four To Doomsday (hence she faints, maybe originally she was going to cark it) so Adric got offed in Earthshock instead. But was there a way each of these controversial companions could have worked? As a team, separately or not at all? Discuss...

I dunno. Perhaps they DID work in a kind of f*cked up clueless flaw-driven way?
Because of their flaws and incapability's maybe it made for more interesting interaction?
Adric was a complete plank though mind you.
I think Davisons era might have been better with just Tegan too though.

Better actors might have helped. Though to be fair they saddled Sutton with a bit of a weird character when it might have been better if she'd just been a normal Earth girl.

It's what I felt when watching the early Davo stories like Four To Doomsday. I think their rows seem glaring because the Dr Who companions used to be so happy to go along with things, with the exception of early Hartnell and Sarah Jane, occasionally. Poor Tegan seemed to be having a nervous breakdown but showed a tougher quality later, whereas Nyssa went the other way!

I don't have a problem with them. I sometimes wonder if Nyssa should have stayed on until Season 21 instead of Tegan, though. Wouldn't it have been lovely if Davison ended up regenerating saving Nyssa in Androzani instead of Peri.

I think Adric and Nyssa worked quite well in Keeper of Traken. There definitely was some chemistry there and the two bonding over their interest in science and loss of their loved ones could have even perhaps led to a romance.
The presence of Tegan however definitely made the TARDIS too crowded after which they basically just turned Adric into a joke character and a turn coat at times. It was a shame, but that's what happens when you overcrowd the TARDIS. Susan similarly suffered badly in the Hartnell era. The only time I think three companions ever worked was Ian, Barbara and Vicki.
