I've only been following it very casually in recent years, but hearing that SKY intend to retire SKY ONE in September is understandably going to evoke strong nostalgia in me from the days I was a committed viewer.
Back when Satellite television was unattainable for our family at the time (money was tight), my brother and I's early experiences with SKY ONE normally ranged from the company my brother tended to keep as a kid, staying over at a friend's house and watching the likes of the DJ Kat Show, which would show the latest episodes of Power Rangers just as the show was getting started on GMTV. Alan's first exposure to the Green Ranger was SKY ONE, my first exposure to Lord Zedd was the same. Reading SKY magazines was how I learned of Rocky, Adam, and Aisha replacing Jason, Zack and Trini.
I remember borrowing a tape which had other shows recorded from SKY ONE, including the Superboy TV show (the Bizzaro saga)
There was of course plenty more besides that to enjoy from the channel. In addition to all the vintage (and the newer and increasingly unfunnier) Simpsons episodes, the channel gave me the likes of 24, Friends, Brainiac: Science Abuse, Battlestar Galactica, Sliders, Roswell Conspiracies, War Planets Shadow Raiders and much more.
Chief amongst them being the golden Indigo/Orange Island years of Pokemon, and, of course, I owe SKY ONE a great deal for introducing both me and Al to professional wrestling, a lifelong passion that I remain committed to. After each episode of Livewire or Smackdown, from 1999 to 2002 we would head up to our bedroom and perform a fairly amateur and poorly co-ordinated game of grappling which did result once in a trip to the infirmary. That kind of interaction awoke a creative spark in my brother, he would map out angles, storylines and directions for characters that he would later apply to his hours spent playing video games. I truly feel like Alan would be a fine booker if he leant his talents to the right promotion.
So thankyou SKY for being there for me as my memories truly started to blossom, they are ones I'll carry with me forever, and due to my habit of ordering Dominoes, I think we can both agree I'll forever take a piece of your Simpsons advertising with me too.
