The Price of No Disease

Ok so I got into a confrontation with an sjw type on another site and I want pose that argument here to see if I’m the arsehole.

Ok so on this site people were talking about what they would do if they had one wish. After a few of us posted, I decided to post about the negatives. For disease I pointed out you take away one of the major, natural firms of human population control and how do you deal with spike in population growth if it become to much for the world to sustain. While some suggested social reforms, which have their own issues, the sjw in question left a snide remake suggesting I was for eugenics and people culling, which I had said nothing about.

When I was asked if I’d lost any close to cancer or altzimerse I said that I had but that I felt disease had it’s place of part of the natural balance and taking it away would have it’s price.

I was then accused of being from bizarro world, how they care for people and find my view something that should not be permitted in social discourse.

I then replied that I to had cared for people, sat by their besides and wished with all my heart to take their illness away, but that that was the emotional part of me. The other part of me wondered what the price of such an action was. I voiced that modern healthcare lets us live longer but by living longer we now suffer these diseases, we have destroyed our eco-system and viruses adapt to our pace our medication.

In my view you can’t cheat reality, you just owe it a bigger debt when it comes knocking. I also pointed out the potential climate and ecological downsides.

Well they shut up after that, either because of my argument or because of all the spelling mistakes I’d made, dislexiea and do typing quick don’t mix, made my post hard to read. I also said that I didn’t agree with killing off all life as our planet is the only one with life on it in the known universe and we should take care of it.

Well since they didn’t pick up after that I left it, though given their and other members behaviour I’m not going back to that site again for a long time. Through when I did just double check this morning someone posted that they agreed with the sjw and that they would make that wish and knew there would be no negative impact. I replayed them deleted my post because I just didn’t want to get into another discussion over it after what happened last time. As I said I was pretty fond with the site by that point d as byway so why do it to myself.

But since I actually care about you guys opinions more , I thought I’d put it to you lot and see if I’m the twat here. Though again I point out that I did not once propose any action, just raised the question of potential problems that could arise.

Personally I'm not a fan of the "it's nature" argument when it comes to disease and death. Lots of things are nature but still wrong and terrible. I've never bought this idea that "we're interfering with nature" because the human race is part of that nature, and so is science, so if science can defeat these terrible things then good. Obviously population is an issue but that's why we should be looking to the future to conquer space as well as death. I just don't know how anyone can look at ageing and disease and death and not find the whole thing utterly abhorrent. 

But perhaps I'm just a romantic twat.

There’s nothing wrong with your view iank. I even said that I respected this sjw’s view, though not their attitude.

I do not view disease and death as anything but horrible but then life is horrible at times. I they have their function in allowing things to change and adapt. To maintain a balance for all.

Humans are part of nature, this is true, but we act like we aren’t. We have badly damage our planet’s echo system all in the name of making better for us.

The problem with over relying on science, and this is coming from a person of no faith, is that it has its limits. Some people, though not yourself, treat it like magic that can solve all problems eventually. But it can’t, science as you say, part of nature, it’s not magic, it can undo damage that’s beyond fixing.

Here’s the thing, as it stand we humans have nowhere to go, let allow the technology to get their quickly enough and terraforming will take multiple lifetimes to get underway. Mean while we’re on the edge of a climate crisis that mirrors the Permian mass extinction that killed 90% of all life on the planet.

We are well and truly in the shite and should be working to help mitigate the damage but we now cannot stop it. But still people want to argue, deny and make things worse.

I ask was all our advancement worth it if humanity dies by its own hand and takes the only planet with advanced life in the known universe with it?

When you take disease away you don’t take away the other issues the world has at that time, not to mention what will happen to humans psychologically in world were disease doesn’t exist. People act as if we got ride of disease the human condition would improve but I argue that it may make us worse, more selfish and less caring.
If any good come from disease, besides stability, it’s that a lot of human charity is spawned from it. Take it away and I feel that a good chunk of human altruism goes with it.


As for death, well it plays its part, and even stars and universes die. If I didn’t die I feel life would either become unbearable or I would be. A horrid creature unable to die and growing more jaded and indifferent with each millennium. To quote a cartoon I watched as a kid, death is the ultimate fairness. Rich and poor, young and old we are all equal in death. Terry Pratchett Viewed death as an old friend who had come to take away all pain and suffering. I agree with both point and since I don’t believe in an after life, when I’m dead il be gone forever but I will also finally behave true rest from all of life’s worries and I enjoy my life all the more because I know it’s finite.

Personally, I think we need these events, and I do feel good come out of them. Case in point, it is pushing America to the bring of civil unrest and its inevitable collapse. That can only be a good thing in my book. Plus, a lot of very vile and disgusting people died out of sheer ignorance and the inability to simply cover their mouth and nose for a short time in the grand scheme of things. It is Dawinism in action. The strong and smart live, the ignorant die.
