6. Rocky Balboa
A good film but a bit depressing and in some ways unnecessary. The fight is decent though and Stallone gives one of his best performances as Rocky. I also love the call-backs to the past and the return of Duke.
5. Rocky II
The first forty minutes or so of Rocky II aren't spectacular. We see him adjusting to his new life after retiring from boxing and his pursuit of a job. However, when he realizes his true calling, to face Apollo Creed once again in the ring, things get really interesting. The training is top class as is the end fight itself. There are also some great emotional moments like when Adrian falls into a coma. It's not a perfect film, but it's a solid follow up to the original and one of the better sequels from the 1970s.
4. Rocky
The original Rocky is still a masterpiece. It's the most gritty and authentic film of the series and probably the most moving too. It isn't fast paced or even that well directed, but the story is first rate and the performances are really special. The fight itself may be dated, but it still gets the blood flowing.
3. Rocky V
Rocky V returned to the realism of the original two movies. It saw Rocky and his family suffer perhaps the toughest challenges of their life. It was also the first and only film in the series not to feature Rocky fighting in the ring. Despite that, the film is very strong and oozing with emotion and adrenaline. The Tommy Gunn fight/training montages are still some of my favourites in the series and the early 90s rap music is right down my street. There are also some powerful emotional scenes which add a lot to the drama. There is a gloomy feeling throughout, but in the end Rocky wins back his family and, in many ways, completes his arc. To be honest, Rocky V would have been a good place to end things.
2. Rocky III
The first two Rocky movies are good, but III is easily the most enjoyable film in the first half of the series. Mr. T is legendary as bad guy Clubber Lang and the Eye of the Tiger is probably the greatest and most iconic montage in cinema history. It's a very 80s film and also a very inspiring one. It saw Rocky come back from the pits to regain the eye of the tiger thanks to former nemesis Apollo Creed and regain the title against Clubber. There are so many iconic moments and scenes like the race on the beach, the charity match with Hulk Hogan and of course the end fight itself.
1. Rocky IV
You can't help but love it. It's ridiculous but who cares? It's the most 80s thing ever made and that automatically makes it awesome. The training in this film is head and shoulders above the other films and the fight with Drago is easily the greatest boxing match ever put to film. The soundtrack rocks and the film is just dripping with testosterone. The montages are epic too. I'm not jumping on the bandwagon here, but I do genuinely consider this one of the best of the lot. It's certainly the most enjoyable one and also the most fast paced entry in the series.
