The actual origin of it is the complete opposite, it meant being aware of establishment oppressive forces which attack in subtle and not so subtle ways - or basically being aware of "the man"(the corrupt establishment). It first usage surfaced in Black Liberation Struggle. That was until rightwing arses misappropriated it with a sprinkle of the old nazi "cultural marxism conspiracy theory" added into the mix with some handy amplification from the mainstream establishment media to mean the direct opposite to it's original meaning. and now, as the yougov poll clearly highlights, people generally haven't got a clue what the hell it means anymore. |

It's the same as "Political Correctness", it's been twisted so far from it's original meaning back in the 80's into a completely different definition unrecognizable from the original.
Bidmead had a point when he obsessed about the transmutation of language in "State of Decay", as indeed so too did Orwell with Newspeak in 1984.
"Political Correctness" never was(or is)something embraced by or enforced by establishment forces because they rally against it.
It was never a term taken particularly seriously by the Left either, the Right Wing have misappropriated it to mean Liberals and their tokenistic empty platitudes.
Identitarianism and Tokenism are patronizing Liberal traits.
