I actually do know a girl who is going through a sex change right now. She used to host some geeky events and is really nice, and I got to know her through that.
It's been quite a hard process for her figuring out that she wants to be a guy and isn't just gender fluid. She tried getting a fake male chest that made her feel comfortable, but it wasn't enough and she is now thinking about saving up for top surgery.
A part of me does wonder if in a few years time ironically the Jodie era and Missy will look dated from this perspective (as well as many others) the way they tried to trivialise gender differences and thus ironically undermined what people like my friend are going through. I can remember being told by spineless classic era fanboys like Culfy that if Time Lords change their height, weight and hair colour why not sex? I was also told that the Doctor in the original series was always genderless because he was asexual.
