On a rewatch of this now.
I seem to remember there were some fans here like Lady and Mott?
Personally I love Gotham. Some of the writing got clunky and repetitive at times, like Fish being brought back, but overall I liked it.
For me it is actually closer to the style of Batman TAS than any other in that it takes advantage of what is great about the Batman universe. Batman can be adapted to so many different types of stories. Gritty crime thrillers, gothic horror, 50s sci fi movie tropes, even some campy humour.
Most versions tend to stick to one style, like Adam West went for the camp, Burton went for the gothic horror, Nolan went for the gritty crime aspects etc. Batman tas however memorably brought them all together, and for me Gotham does the same.
I think Gotham also had the best versions of the Penguin, The Riddler, and Catwoman. Its version of the Joker was excellent, and I think making the Joker a kind of symbol for the downtrodden of Gotham was an inspired idea, and one that later was used for the 2019 Joker film. Monaghan was also sensational in the role, though I don't think he quite eclipsed Hamill.
I also think it did the prequel idea better than Smallville. The problem with Smallville was that it killed off most of Supes enemies before he became Superman. Kind of defeated the whole point of it being a prequel.
In Gotham meanwhile apart from Ra's Al Ghul (who can be brought back.) All of his villains are ready to go. (Though I suppose Butch is another big villain that died before Bruce became Batman. Shame as I liked him. Maybe he can be brought back too.)
