For a story which was essentially cobbled together (after poor David Whitaker couldn't cope with the changes to the Dr Who format), I've always found this one to be intensely engrossing. The way the conspiracy/mystery of the astronauts unfolds is brilliantly done, and the guest cast is one of the show's most memorable, from the idealistic Carrington to the hilarious Taltalian to the brutally ruthless Reegan. And the astronauts make for very creepy and memorable monsters. Plus, it has that cool as f*ck title sequence edit. The Ambassadors! Of! DEATH!

Those astronauts scared the shit out of me when I was 7! I love all the contemporary space rocket stuff. This is such a great season though, that I can only consider it my 3rd favourite, even though I rate it highly.

It's a decent enough adventure, maybe an episode or two too long. I'd rank it as the weakest of season 7 however, but again since that's one of the best seasons of any series ever made that's not saying much against it.

I've always thought it was extraordinary. I didn't get it the first time I saw it, it's not one to introduce new fans to the show. But it might be one of the greatest achievements of Doctor Who. A very rare occasion where the lack of structure in storylining really helps. I just love the adult professionals doing a job vibe of all of Season 7. In this story, that's even true of the villains.
