I've gone off it a bit in recent views tbh. It's certainly not in the same league as City of Death.

Time Warrior is a stellar adventure, one of my favourite Third Doctor stories. Bob Holmes at his best, and it absolutely pisses on City of death.
If only Holmes had done independent work, it would completely overshadow that nonsense about the bathrobe bloke that Adams kept going on about

The Time Warrior is terrific, but better than City of Death? I think some members need to check they've taken their medication properly.

I'm going to have to go with Time Warrior here, though only just about. I accept City of Death is more unique with its setting and admittedly has a much more imaginative plot with Scaroth as opposed to just an alien crashing in the past which is a fairly generic concept (though Bob Holmes typically got more out of it than most.) If I was doing a best ever story list, then City would probably be higher, but in terms of personal enjoyment you cannot beat the Time Warrior.
It's an absolute laugh. Linx and Irongron have the best bromance of any two villains. Irongron switching between loving him like a brother and wanting to bury an axe in his skull is hilarious.
Meanwhile Rushy Bob Holmes and Philip Hinchcliff did co create an idea for a sci fi series together that they were going to work on after DW, but due to shitty politics at the Beeb it never took off. You can read about the concept in Bob Holmes biography. From what I remember it sounded great, and yes I agree if only it had gone ahead then Bob Holmes could have got the respect he was due.
He is still remembered as the greatest Doctor Who writer of all time, which is not nothing, but yes unlike Douglas Adams, or Terry Nation or even the likes of Toby Whitehouse from new who, he isn't as well known among the GP or even genre fans sadly as he never had a show of his own. He only did ironically the best bits of other people's shows.
Maybe in another universe he and Hinchcliff's show got made and his career really took off, and he lived a lot longer and was able to write for American genre shows in the 90s too like Buffy and Angel. I think his love of horror and camp would have translated well into those shows.

I will say I also think Time Warrior is Bob Holmes at his peak. At that point he really could do no wrong and was brimming with such enthusiasm for the concept and the genre, that even a story like this he was forced to do, with a fairly generic premise is still brimming with so much imagination, wit and creativity.

Time Warrior for me, obviously. I like City of Death more than i used to do, but it's still overrated.

Tbh I don't actually mind City of Death or Adams at all, I just get tired of seeing it overpraised. It's a perfectly fine romp, a brainless runaround.
I much prefer Shada, I genuinely adore that story and I feel like Adams put much more effort in crafting a truly compelling adventure there. It's actually my favourite Fourth Doctor story.

No, City of Death is not overrated.
I'm starting to think Time Warrior might be, though...

No, City of Death is not overrated. I'm starting to think Time Warrior might be, though... The Time Warrior didn't even make the top 20 in this poll however, if anything it's UNDER-rated.(much like Seeds of Doom and Inferno also are in my opinion) I'm yet to see any poll of Classic Series stories where City of Death is outside the top 10, or m(any) where it's even outside the top 5. The Green Death and The Daemons also don't get a sniff in that top 20 either, another couple of top-notch stories. Tom Baker is hugely over represented with 9 out of 20 stories, now it's only fair he gets the bulk of them because he did 7 years, but only about half of the stories he did were of classic status. Patrick Troughton gets 4 stories, Peter Davison gets 3 stories, Sylvester McCoy 2 stories and Jon Pertwee for his FIVE full seasons only gets 2 stories? William Hartnell not even a single entry? Bollocks.

Bollocks. I'd say the Tom Baker era is as overrated as the Pertwee era is underrated. So many classic Pertwees like Inferno, Day of the Daleks are left out to dry by official fandom, and completely fine Pertwee stories get absolutely shat on as the worst there ever was, whilst series 7 and 10 are never held up as candidates for the most consistent seasons by fans. You can thank guys like Paul Cornell though who made it trendy to hate Pertwee in the 90s.

No series 7 stories ever being in these top tens really bugs me. The whole series should be in the top 10. If Inferno starred Tom Baker, I could see it reaching the top spot. As good as Baker is, he ultimately dominates most polls by default by association. As such, other incarnations (who weren’t part of Davies’ first era, bafflingly) struggle by comparison to get a look in.

Here's the top ten for NuWho:
1. The Day of the Doctor 2. Blink 3. The Empty Child 4. Human Nature 5. The Parting of the Ways 6. Dalek 7. The Eleventh Hour 8. Vincent and the Doctor 9. The Girl in the Fireplace 10. Silence in the Library
Now that's a positively awful list. Day at the top, the overrated Empty Child in third and bloody Dalek and Silence in there too. Can't argue with Blink, Human Nature and Parting, though.

I can very easily argue Blink. Blink was barely a blip on my radar as a kid. Made no impression at all.
