" I was also less than enamoured of Lalla Ward as the snooty second Romana - perhaps the least charismatic companion since Dodo."
This is one of many stupid quotes from Patrick "Love and Monsters is a five star classic" Mulkern's disastrous three star review for City of Death on the Radio Times website. Here are some other belters:
"She's a Time Lady (a term coined in City of Death) and brilliant with it (finessing Scaroth's time machine), but has the bearing of a class swot - an image reinforced by Romana's school uniform. The 27-year-old Ward intended to hearten younger viewers fed up with their own itchy school gear, but the sight of Tom and "ooh" Lalla lolloping along boulevards hand in hand conveys "uncle and niece" on a saucy weekend."
" Like the multiple Mona Lisas behind which the Doctor scribbles, "This is a fake", there's an underlying sense of pretension and phoneyness."
"As a writer, he (Douglas Adams) eschews suspense and gravity, the dramatic heart of characters and situations that will make you care and want to tune in next week."
This is the same man that tried desperately to make his readers believe Love and Monsters was some sort of masterpiece.

"As a writer, he (Douglas Adams) eschews suspense and gravity, the dramatic heart of characters and situations that will make you care and want to tune in next week." He's not wrong there... City of Death is up there with Underworld and Planet of Evil as one of the most lethally 'okay' stories in Dr Who history. It sure exists. It definitely is a thing I saw.

City of Death is up there with Underworld This is the only occasion I’ve ever seen both serials likened together in the same sentence thus far. 🤣

Lalla was good compared to what came after, but i always found the Doc 4/Romana 2 pairing a bit on the smug side. Particularly in City of Death. I prefer Mary Tamm/Romana 1. It's a different dynamic. Less familiarity. Less cosy.

Less familiarity. Less cosy. Absolutely agree with this. Tamm is the definitive Romana. Dignified, regal and much more interesting. I found it very funny that Tom still lusted after her on the commentary tracks. "Ohh, Maaaaaary..."

His Remembrance review is even worse. He has a go at it for looking and sounding like an 80s production. Do you think that might be because it was made in 1988?

This from the same man who gave Arachnids in the UK five stars. Mulkern is a professional troll. Nice work if you can get it.

There's lots of reviews from the 90's, Doctor Who reviews being just one show of many, where the reviewer couldn't get past the visual shortcomings of a 70's TV show or film, saying these shows don't "pass the test of time". What's happened since is these 70's TV shows and films have lasted the "test of time" a damn site better than the reviews condemning them. Has Patrick Mulkern been in a coma for 30 years?
