Sorry, odd title. What I'm trying to say is that is it better to have the Doctor try and prevent disaster and destruction for an entire story (like Pyramids) than actually show said destruction (like Empire of Death)? The latter shows that ending the universe only hurts the story because you know that it won't last and that there's a big red reverse button on hand to sort it out. This wasn't the case in classic serials like Dalek Invasion of Earth, but it has been the case more than once in NuWho. It's a bit like the Terminator in that the original was always about preventing a major catastrophe. Salvation is set in the future where humanity's fate has already been sealed and it lacks tension as a result.

Salvation lacks tension because the movie was poorly made.

Salvation lacks tension because the movie was poorly made. Yes and also because its devastated future is dull as dishwater.

I agree. The desire by fans to see a future war movie always baffled me - it's not interesting save as a mcguffin thay needs to be stopped. Say what you will about Genysis, but the one thing it got right is that it's the time travel that's the actual interesting part.

The idea is far to subtle for the current production team Maxil.
In a good story, like Pyramids of Mars, if Sutekh escapes the universe is f*cked. There is no magic rewind button to undo all the destruction he'd unleashed should he escape. Thats why the Doctor dose all he can to stop it from happening and only a last bit of ingenuity saves the day. It cannot fix all the harm Sutekh has done already, but at least the universe is safe from an omnicidal maniac with the powers of a god.
In modern who we have gone from convenient Deus ex Machina at the end of of each season fixing everything and restoring the statuesque, to complete bull shit the writers have pulled out their ass because their talentless hacks. The resolution of Empire of Death sounds like utter drivel and answers a very big question as to why RTD wanted to make the show "magic". Because magic can be used by shitty writers to hand wave away any of the utter nonsense all but the most self deluding cannot avoid seeing.
