Finished my rewatch of the Tennant era mostly and I just noticed a similarity between Donna's arc and a hilarious episode of Married With Children.
It's a coincidence I'm sure as let's face it no idea is original, but it's hilarious to think what many regarded as one of the saddest stories in DW is pretty much the same as one of the funniest episodes of Married With Children. It shows you the line between comedy and tragedy is very small.
Married with Children is about an AWFUL family called the Bundy's, with the father being depicted as a sad loser (though I was always jealous of him since he was married to Katey Sagal LOL.)
Anyway in one episode aliens start to visit him and steal his socks and though the aliens are very sweet, they can't speak English and can't tell him why they are doing it. It turns out Al's socks serve as fuel for a rocket to stop a giant comet that would have torn its way through hundreds of worlds killing billions. Al is looked on as a hero for supplying the fuel on many planets (apart from earth obviously who have no idea) and it's even mentioned that the aliens sing songs of him on other planets, but the tragedy is that because the aliens can't speak English, Al never knows and goes on thinking he is a loser with a family that doesn't respect him.
As you know this is pretty much EXACTLY what happened to Donna. She saved the multiverse from the Daleks, but the Doctor had to wipe her mind and she goes back to thinking she is a loser and worthless with a family that doesn't like her (well her mother at least.) Meanwhile aliens across the universe worship her as a hero. They even practically reuse the same line about Al that aliens still sing songs about her.
LOL I'll never be able to look at either story the same way. Question though does this make you feel more sorry for Al, or see the humour in Donna's situation that she can go from saving the universe to working a crappy 9-5 job?
