I'll be honest here I don't like it when Doctor Who doesn't have monsters or supernatural or fantasy, sci fi elements. I'm not saying that's an objective truth, but for me that's how I feel. What about the Hartnell era historicals?

What about the Hartnell era historicals? To be brutally honest? Same applies. Again it's just a personal taste, but for the most they bore me. Maybe I'm a bit short sighted, but I want more monsters. That said if I were a showrunner or producer, I would still do historicals as I would want the show to be varied. (Of course I wouldn't write them, hell I probably wouldn't write any myself. Diversity of writers rather than who you want to shag is more important for DW. Oh wait does that make me homophobic according to tv tropes? )

I dig pure historicals. The Massacre in particular is brilliant. It also works so beautifully as an audio drama. We're probably never going to see the footage so what I do is listen to the audio, close my eyes and imagine something bigger than what was transmitted. Same goes for The Myth Makers.

I think the historicals work beautifully when they're not dry. The decision to have them lean more towards comedy (The Romans, the Myth Makers, the Gunfighters) while keeping the futuristic stories dramatic was very clever.
And plus, it just adds realism to the show. There wouldn't be aliens around every corner.

All absolutely valid points and again that's why I would bring them back if I was showrunner, but for my own enjoyment whilst I'm not saying I hate them all, I honestly do sympathise with viewers who wanted the aliens and monsters to come to the fore.

Everyone probably knows I'm not a big historicals fan. Particularly the lighter toned ones like The Romans, Myth Makers and especiallyThe Gunfighters. Somehow, The Aztecs was an instant exception for me because I loved the performances. And I like The Massare because of the darker tone. And ep 4 in particular for that great scene between the Doctor and Steven.
