It's interesting how one changes their mind after spending a few days away from Doctor Who sites and fans. I've had time to think and I'm not sure I should be so hasty in crapping all over something that at one point in my life was very special to me. I watched a bit of Smith and Jones earlier on the iplayer (my NuWho boycott didn't last very long, did it?) and all those good childhood memories came flooding back. I mean, it's not difficult to see why I loved it so much in the first place. Freema is the greatest modern companion and Tennant is on top of his game for much of the series. Daleks in 1930s Manhattan, Carey Mulligan vs creepy statues, the Master taking over the entire planet... small wonder I was so enchanted by the series as a child. I remember that obsessive deep love for that series so vividly and I'm actually willing to set aside all my irritations with RTD and co and allow myself to enjoy those stories again. This applies also to stories like Boom Town, Bad Wolf/Parting of the Ways and Rise of the Cybermen. The rest of it I'm not too keen on, but I'm not going to tarnish it all with the same brush anymore. I'm far too young to be jaded. Things are tough and to me some of the RTD era is a gateway to a happy and positive time for me. Some of those sunny Saturdays on a seaside town staying with my late Nan and Grandad back in 2007 and waiting for a new episode to air are some of my favourite NuWho memories.

A lot of it was, but not Series 3. Even without the nostalgia, there's still a good run of stories in there.

Honestly series 2 and 3 had good moments loved School reunion and those krillitane creatures really creepy.

They were all perfectly fine seasons of TV, and I have absolutely no issue counting the RTD era as part of the main canon. The worst episodes of RTD don't come close to the worst of Moffat or Chibnall.

Honestly series 2 and 3 had good moments loved School reunion and those krillitane creatures really creepy. I didn't always get on with Seal but I did come to see he was right about RTD 1.0 - it was, for the most part, bloody awful. I went back to watch the odd episode of it, and even the ones with a bit of empathy or relatablity ('Turn Left', 'School Reunion') or clever ideas ('Blink') never feel like the same show at all: the same could be said for 'Children Of Earth'. And the same could be said for the Moffat era - if it weren't Dr Who I'd probably be more kindly-disposed towards it. We tend to have slightly fond memories of past entertainment, but such rose-tinted nostalgia is misleading - the Moffat era's many bad stories are no better now than when they were on either. However you are right, Maxil, that it's not worth getting too angry or hyper-critical about things, it can become a vicious cycle!

That's true. I'm still bitter about what RTD's mentor did to The Bill 20 years on.

That's true. I'm still bitter about what RTD's mentor did to The Bill 20 years on. It wasn't a great progression, was it? The tight little self-contained dramas of its classic run with their clever denouements were replaced by bloated soap-opera sludge. "Look at us - we've got an actress we've poached from Corrie and she's now a lesbian!" Like Nu Who it was almost unrecognizable, once you get past the goodwill.

I'm far too young to be jaded. Just about sums it up for me. I get far too caught up in nostalgia for being such a young man. Perhaps I need to readjust my outlook on the world.
