I've read that back in 2008 RTD was going to do a 5th series at one point, but ultimately turned it down to do the specials instead.
The 5th series would have had the Doctor travelling with Martha who left UNIT after her guilt over the Osterhagen key, and Lady Christina.
The main antagonist would have been the Beast meanwhile with a finale set in the 10th century, during which Lady Christina would have died and Martha would have returned to earth to go freelance and met up with Mickey.
The End of Time would still have been the finale to Tennant however.
Now this is just a rumour but there are some bits of proof for it.
The Beasts number pops up in a few stories in series 4. RTD would often have the arc word for the next season pop up in the current one. For instance Torchwood is mentioned in series 1, the Medeusa Cascade is mentioned in season 3.
Also there was a comic story that featured both the return of Martha and the Beast too, set in between Journey's End and the End of Time. There is also a reference to the Doctor fighting a Demon in the End of Time. Now this could be what's known as an orphaned reference, which is where a writer throws in a reference to a plot, which then gets abandoned, and they forget to cut out that line. (Like the Wasting in State of Decay.) Or it could be RTD putting a reference to his abandoned story, same way he called a supporting character Penny in Partners in Crime in a reference to the companion he abandoned.
What do you think?
Personally I wish they had done this for the following reasons.
New Who has been too reliant on classic era enemies. As much as I love the classic who rogues and would definitely still want them to show up, it really needed to come up with new badguys. The Beast I think would have been a good candidate, and had they used him this year, that could have set a good example for later seasons to follow. Sadly their first attempt to have a new villain, Madame Kovarian was a disaster and put them off, meaning in the future, even when they basically wanted a completely new villain like Missy, they still linked it to the old series, pissing everybody off. Who knows maybe if they'd kept doing seasons with new villains after the success of the Beast, New Who wouldn't have become more obsessed with smashing up the original and formed its own identity more.
Meanwhile I think the gap year was the biggest mistake they ever made as it also set a bad precedent for the show to miss years which ultimately not only killed its audience, but let it to it more or less being cancelled.
What do you guys think? I personally would have LOVED to have seen Freema and Michelle Ryan take on Satan at least.
