‘Frontier in Space’ ep 5: Great scene with the Doctor and the Emperor of Draconia. This episode has perked up a bit and the modelling work is consistently impressive. It really is just a long drawn out exposition – which is the intention of course and relatively daring I suppose, but it doesn’t work for me…1.5/5

‘Frontier in Space’ ep 6: All Jo deserves is shit soup after giving that poor Ogron a f*cking banana. Nice outfit for Jo though that black number. Some nice devilish stuff from Delgado and this is an overly action-packed episode after three episodes of basically f*ck all happening. Decent enough Dalek reveal scene. Definitely more fun than any other episode so far (been a bit of a snore-fest really) and nice move to use the Master’s perception filter to escape. A gun blast to the Doctor that will be recreated when Billie Piper and Tennant reunite in nupoo’s ‘The Stolen Earth’. Understated climax, but I guess that’s the feeder into the next epic story. An improvement, so 4/5

‘Planet of the Daleks’ ep 1: I like this stuff with him contacting the Time Lords at the start/recovering etc. and Jo’s concern (she’s still got that neat little black number on too – though she’s out of it and changed in a heartbeat)…Looking forward to Who stalwarts Bernard Horsfall and Prentis Hancock later in the story too, even if the prospect of another Nation re-take on the Daleks is causing me some trepidation. Certainly, the first 10 mins have been pretty atmospheric and enjoyable. I may live to regret saying this. The planet set is pretty good, and they’re at least trying to compensate for the top-down studio lighting with coloured lower lights and lower dark shots. Cobwebbed dead astronaut is impressive Spiridon invisible effects also work well. Excellent timpani in the soundtrack, well-mixed with the electronic soundscape. Unclear how that Tardis door was opened! Lovely recap on the first Dalek story between Horsfall and Pertwee. Proper jeopardy with the planet dangers, Jo’s infection and an unexplained mission (with a little of ‘Mission to the Unknown’ thrown in by Nation too) – it’s a high-quality opener with a classic cliff-hanger reveal. 5/5

Time-Flight - it really is naff and cheap looking. Episode 1 has a certain charm - it starts well, with a nice simple idea (airliner and passengers transported back to prehistoric times) and I like the scenes in Heathrow airport and aboard the Concorde but that's about it. And to think that this adventure followed the mighty Earthshock.

‘Planet of the Daleks’ ep 2: almost a non-recap! Pretty weird. Invisible effects still good here and Katy on great form. The episode is a come down from the high voltage opener, though that’s to be expected I guess. Quality Dalek voices in this one I think. Prosaic exposition episode, decent cliff-hanger even if everyone saw it coming. 3/5

‘Planet of the Daleks’ ep 3: Ice caverns looking good, Doctor’s escape is well done and generally more upbeat than ep 2. Decent work horse of an episode with a touch more energy than the previous one 4/5

Thinking of getting back on the wagon soon, I'll watch the Daemons some time soon.

‘Planet of the Daleks’ ep 4: Nice dialogue between Rebec and Taron, a bit more complexity to the side characters. Also good touch of Jo explaining what the handshake is, emphasises the Thal alienness. Not so sure about those glow-in-the-dark eyes, not very convincing. Not a bad episode, but still clearly filler. 3/5

‘Planet of the Daleks’ ep 5: Decent ambush by Taron and the pace has picked up a bit thankfully. Bacteria bomb subplot finally comes real (no point just having the Daleks bollock on about it if no one else knows the threat), good turn from Skelton as Wester too. Bit rash of the Doctor to let Jo go Dalek-baiting with Latep! In general, we’re back on track story-wise and I’m captivated – f*cking standard Nation six-parter, just too long, should have been four, decent start, slow middle and souped-up finale. Nice move by Wester with the bacteria. Good cliff-hanger here too. 4/5

‘Planet of the Daleks’ ep 6: Jon looking especially hero-like at the start of this. Not sure about that sudden conversion of Latep to infatuation with Jo…bit out of the blue! Didn’t need to be given there was so much f*cking padding in eps 3 and 4, they could have developed a sub-plot easily there. Supreme Dalek is a hard ass boss it has to be said. Mind you, he looks a dick a few scenes later after he f*cks up haha. Model Daleks in the multitude shot don’t look great but they use it sparingly enough I think. Perhaps this Latep shit has been squeezed in to be the foreplay for the next story where she does eventually leave…but still, naff really. Nice ending. Soon to be an end of an era. 4.5/5

‘The Green Death’ ep 1: that effect on the miner’s hand at the start…I can’t decide whether it’s woeful or brilliant. But the full effect when he’s pulled the siren is not bad! That initial bi=play between the Doc and Jo is great while he talks Metebelis and she talks about Jones etc. Lovely to se Nick – ‘this fella’s bright green…and dead!’. Lol. Nice little friction between the Doc and Brig too. Interesting framing of this with the Doc saying ‘the fledgling flies the coop’ in the first ep before she actually does, fits nicely with the circularity of Jo screwing up the Doc’s experiment back in ‘Terror’ then doing the same with Jones’s. And of course there is the parallel set-up of the Doctor’s visit to Metebelis 3 preparing for his own last hurrah at the end of the next season, and interesting ‘Janus’-like story that looks back and forward in short and long terms. Willis is excellent here. Nice also to see Talfryn Thomas here, last seen as the news leak in ‘Spearhead from Space;. It’s a really good rollocking opener, lots happening, great acting, no shitty CSO (yet!) and a quality music score. Classic Who really, developing what it does best (UNIT, unknown threat on Earth etc.) and preparing to evolve and change as it always does. 5/5

‘The Green Death’ ep 2: Good resolution to the cliff-hanger, but the dodgy CSO is already in evidence. Good move to have the Doctor come up with a rebel plan with Prof Jones, but to facilitate it the narrative has to have the Brigadier refuse to assert his authority and demand/force the chemical company for the cutting equipment which is a bit out of character. Stevens is an excellent nefarious presence, suave but with more smarm than the Master. Ah, Jon loved a hard hat didn’t he… Mine shaft stuff (CSO lifts excepted) look quality and there’s a clear attempt to differentiate between the sets too. Maggots not *too* bad in terms of realisation, though the entrapment cliff-hanger is a ridiculous coincidental set-up. Enjoyable stuff nonetheless, 4/5

‘The Green Death’ ep 3: Filler, sustained mainly by a fantastic supporting cast. Courtney’s jesting over dinner is excellent – actually so is the whole scene with the nut-hutch members. There is that great scene where Jo is apathetic to the Doctor’s crystal…and he knows…she’s got other interests now…maggot effect is shit. 3.5/5

‘The Green Death’ ep4: Nice to see Benton and a relatively sizeable UNIT. The Doctor’s disguise is pretty good haha, but I’m overall not really feeling the threat here. Guess Yates-Undercover is fun enough. Decent enough cliff-hanger, but a pretty slow episode overall, 3/5
